The Story

The result of rigorous selection at each stage of production, in both the vineyard and the winery, this great, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon wine is typical of the Saint-Estèphe appellation. Structured and tannic but with all the elegance and refinement of a Grand Cru Classé, with time it develops a delicate and complex bouquet.

  Blackberries, minerals, detailed, nuanced, quite intense, fruit forward nose, layered, spices, floral and lifted nose. 
Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, blackberries, anise, dark fruits, liquorice, firmer, detailed, nuanced, incredible depth, refined, effortless, long finish. 96-98

Wow. This is the essence of Montrose, with blackberry, blackcurrant, crushed stone and earth. I have not tasted a Montrose like this in 42 years of my career. It has a much more vertical nature to it, with layered tannins that go very deep and long, The muscular structure and intensity is something else. This is a new era for Montrose. It is now made from only 45 hectares of vineyards right in front of the chateau, instead of about 60 before. 75% cabernet sauvignon, 21% merlot and 4% cabernet franc. 99-100

 Dark purple colour with violet hue and almost black core. Aromatic and expressive nose with fragrant fruit, very floral character, peonies and hints of mallow blossoms, in the background excellent fruit, blackberries and blackcurrants, hints of chocolate, sweet spices and fine minerality. On the palate well structured with juicy fruit quoting the nose, fine floral hints in the background, a whiff of liquorice, sweet spices and refined toasting. Energetic wine with freshness, finesse and persistence.
