MARC CHAGALL

A painter, engraver and sculptor, Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was born in Russia of Orthodox Jewish stock. After an early working visit to Paris he made his home there in 1923, spending the war years in the United States. His painting is a synthesis of the Jewish and Russian cultural traditions, a world that seems to float in space, half-realistic, half-symbolic. We find all the great events of human life observed by an eye that h...

Written Notes

I have tasted this wine 25 times since 1990, and it has always been a mystery to me. Sometimes it is an almost brilliant wine with great complexity and length, and other times it is an unbalanced, hard and mean wine like this attractive looking magnum. Good appearance, level was by the neck. Decanted for one hour. Aged look and smell – prematurely old. Probably the most disappointing wine of this otherwise lovely evening. The taste was a bit green and it really was not very giving or pleasing. Hard and too tannic, where are the fruit and complexity? All right, it has an artistic label to look at and it even smells wonderful, and some of my guests even liked it, but still it is a mystery why this Mouton is so often cruel and unattractive to me – it should be much better – look at the Latour!

The 1971 Mouton is wonderfully rich and still holding back. Beautiful plum, toasted oak, berry and tobacco character. Firm with a full body. Drink now!
