Wine Advocate 95 points

Bottled in June, 1997, this profound Mouton is more accessible than the more muscular 1996. A blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 19% Merlot, it reveals an opaque purple color, and reluctant aromas of cassis, truffles, coffee, licorice, and spice. In the mouth, the wine is "great stuff," with superb density, a full-bodied personality, rich mid-palate, and a layered, profound finish that lasts for...

Wine Information

Château Mouton Rothschild 1995

Climatic conditions
1995 was a year of contrasts, with abundant rainfall from January to March followed by very fine, warm weather from April to September.

The vegetation cycle began quickly, about seven days earlier than the average. Budbreak began on 23 March for Merlot and 30 March for Cabernet Sauvignon.

Having begun early, the vegetation cycle continued at a steady pace. Flowering took place evenly...

Vintage 1995

Bordeaux / An excellent year for both sides of the Gironde and just the vintage that Bordeaux needed after the rain affected vintages of the previous 4 years. A mild winter and early spring was followed by a dry, hot summer. It did rain in early September but the rain was less than in the previous 4 vintages and, crucially, there was perfect weather from September 20th through to October.

Quality is high across all levels and appellations, ...

Written Notes

Great dark red colour with some slight lightening around the edges and completely opaque. Rich and open bouquet with exquisite aromas of spices, black fruits and new oak. On the palate the wine still boasted aggressive tannins, with an almost fleshy structure. On the palate it was rich and spiny, possessing excellent acidity with flashes of fruit and earth. Good intensity, and some ripe, sweet fruit were already around. A substantial finale, hard tannins still holding firm, great length pooled with class and freshness. Already an amazingly satisfactory wine with lots of life ahead. Pure Bordeaux drinking pleasure!

The 1995 Mouton Rothschild that followed and ended this flight didn’t keep up with the 1996. ‘Plastic pamper’ came from the crowd, along with ‘crushed gavel, saran wrap and milk.’ It had a grainy nose but a soft finish. It was a nice wine, but a letdown after the 1996, which is clearly distancing itself from its oft compared and similarly priced sibling (92).

Ruby. Blackberries, anise, fruity, detailed, spices, scented, exotic, nuanced and layered. Stunning nose, seductive. Just layers of aromas. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, detailed, fruity, blueberries, anise, spices, nuanced, detailed, layered, exceptional balance, yet again, there is just something with this wine I just love. Second bottle in just over a month, magic. 98
