Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Mouton Rothschild needs considerable swirling to coax out notes of freshly crushed blackcurrants and wild blueberries leading to touches of clove oil, lavender, star anise, and black truffle with a hint of wild sage. The medium-bodied palate is tightly wound, with a firm frame of grainy tannins and bold freshness supporting the muscular black fruits, finishing on a lingering ferrous note. The blend is 93% ...

Wine Information

In 2023, Mouton Rothschild’s Grand Vin has the second-highest percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon after the 2010 (which had 94%). It’s precise and pinpoint with a brooding depth to the fruit, cut by a herbal line that brings additional freshness. There’s an impressive, creamy mouth-feel, with wave upon wave of crunchy fruit. The tannins give a velvet grip, framing the powerful fruit. It’s long, intense – a serious Mouton that should develop beaut...

Written Notes

Tasted in April 2024. 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Merlot. 13.3% alcohol. Potent and distinguished. Plenty of blackcurrants and crushed cherries spiced up with tobacco, graphite, and leather. Powerful on the palate with great structure, complexity, depth, and length. Vibrant, sophisticated, and with excellent mid-palate. Badass wine.

Intensité aromatique remarquable, corps superbe même si le tannin est encore un peu ferme par rapport à celui d’autres crus de ce niveau. Il aura besoin d’un lent
élevage : l’équipe en place excelle dans cette pratique. 97-98

  • 98p

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Fine oak savouriness, black forest berries, delicate hints of blackberry and liquorice, tobacco nuances. Juicy, elegant, fine red berry notes of cranberry, silky, fine tannins, fresh acid structure, pleasant cherry fruit on the finish, salty aftertaste, lingers, a lively food companion, a hint of cassis in the aftertaste.

Cassis, blackberries, dark fruits, anise, exotic, spices, fruit driven, nuanced nose, liquorice.
Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, blackberries, dark fruits, detailed, nuanced, blackberries, spices, layered, saline, minerals, stuperb balance, long finish. A beauty. 97-99

This is the most structured Mouton since the great 2016, with tannins that start slowly and then take off. It’s muscular and toned. It’s full-bodied but doesn’t come across too heavy. It builds up in intensity and goes on and on and on. It just keeps expanding. I took a double take here. 93% cabernet sauvignon and 7% merlot. 98-99

  • 99p

Dark purple colour with violet hue and black core.  Very seductive nose with elegant fruit reminiscent of blackcurrants and hints of blackcurrant jelly, blackcurrants spurs, fine floral aroma reminiscent of wisteria and hints of  violets, hints of liquorice in the background. A great wine with tension and  fine character, multi-layered with ripe dark berries and hints of black stone fruit. Very precise wine with freshness, ripe tannins and excellent length. Stunning.
