Wine Advocate 91 points

In the blind tasting in December, this wine finally began to reveal some potential. It has been closed and frightfully tannic for the last decade. The wine exhibits a good dark ruby/garnet color, a sweet nose of cedar, chocolate, cassis, and spices, good ripe fruit and extraction, and a weighty, large-scaled, tannic finish. Although still unevolved, it is beginning to throw off its cloak of tannin and exhibit more c...

1975 ANDY WHAROL
Born in Philadelphia, Andy Warhol (1930-1987) began as a commercial artist in an advertising agency and was to become one of the leading exponents of Pop Art, which he himself defined as "the art of making the ordinary original". He went on to apply the same treatment to the stars: Marily...

Vintage 1975

Bordeaux: After four miserable vintages came the hot vintage of 1975 which briefly put Bordeaux wines in the spotlight once again. The unstable temperature of September turned into good weather for the harvest. The grapes were high in sugar, but many reds, especially those made from Cabernet Sauvignon, lacked phenolic ripeness. This resulted in masculine and even aggressive reds with austere and even harsh tannins.

Written Notes

Good-looking bottle, very top shoulder and promising colour. Wonderful deep, dark and mature colour. Quite powerful and tannic bouquet. This is finally showing some potential, but it is still too dry and unbalanced, yet definitely more drinkable than five years ago. The palate opened well with a touch of earthy and white chocolate flavours, but the overall balance and depth of fruit suggest that the tannin will outlive the fruit. The finish was quite short but pleasant. Mouton, which is usually a slow developer, is today somehow less promising than many wines of this vintage.

The 1975 Mouton Rothschild had a wafery nose that was gravelly with some carob qualities. There was nice balance yet loads of tannins to this back-sided baby. It got more chocolaty in the glass, complementing its smooth, dusty flavors (92).

I absolutely love the nose of licorice, minerals, black currants, and berries. Full and slightly hard and acidic, but I could smell it all night. It softens and turns velvety and dusty on the finish with lots of fruit. Why wait on this?

Top shoulder fill. Ruby, brick rim. Cassis, prunes, figs, leather, cigars. Fresh mouthfeel, lovely acidity, high of ripe tannins, fruity palate in a classic style, very long finish. The acidity carries the fruit all the way. Last bottle was fresher and tighter, more fruity, but this one showed nicely as well.
