The 2005 Mouton Rothschild was the first of our First Growths, and we had them all ready. Tar, smoke and a little marijuana green crept out of its nose. The flavors were mocha, and the wine was softer and easier. Someone called it simplistic, and while that might have been a bit harsh, it definitely under-impressed compared to some of the wines already sampled (94).

Very good, bright and intense colour. Really strong nose with blackcurrant, coffee and spice. The abundant, full-bodied taste is rich and balanced. The subdued fruitiness of the aftertaste is overpowered by tannins and acidity in the intensive mouthfeel and overwhelming power. Long and silky finish. A truly respectable masterpiece of this château.

In May 2008 when tasted blind, against Lafite 2005, Latour 2005 and several wines from Italy and Chile - so-called Berlin tasting, was impressive. Black red coloured wine, dusty blackcurrants on the nose and palate, very sophisticated, fabulous length and wonderful balance. Elegant, not especially concentrated but incredibly well-knitted. My initial impression was 100% Bordeaux because of this wine's elegance and complexity and my guess was Lafite 2005. It turned out to be Mouton Rothschild 2005 and I was really impressed, because it tasted much better than out of barrel in April 2006. In November 2015 it was a wonderful experience with grated chocolate and cocoa on the nose, perfectly ripe grapes, sophisticated and sublime wine. Best appearence yet imho.

Inside Information

Chateau Mouton Rothschild is legendary estate. It was purchased in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild and in 1924 his successors became the first Bordeaux vignerons to introduce estate bottling. Although the chateau was not selected as one of the four First Growth Chateaux in the historic 1855 classification, Mouton Rothschild was elevated from a second growth to first growth in 1973, the only chateau ever to be moved from the second to first classification. The Rothschild talent for marketing and innovation also resulted in the wine industry’s first high-profile label design program. Since 1945 the chateau has each year commissioned a famous artist to design the label. The list of contributors includes Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol. In Pauillac Mouton has 205 acres under cultivation, which includes 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. On average the vines are nearly 50 years old. Annual production is 300,000 bottles of Chateau Mouton Rothschild.
