HISAO DOMOTOA

Born in Kyoto of a family of painters, Hisao Domoto (1928-) studied traditional Japanese painting before travelling to Europe in 1952. This introduced him to Western abstract painting and persuaded him to break with his earlier training.

Resolutely abstract, his work was inspired initially by the theory of Informality. His “Solutions of Continuity” followed: superimposed strips of contrasting colours. Then came his “Possibi...

Vintage 1979

Bordeaux / The year 1979 partly repeated the 1978 vintage with a wet and cool spring, a hot summer, a cool and dry autumn. Dry whites did well this year while reds, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon, struggled to reach full physiological maturity. Once again, Mouton was a disappointment. The right bank did better with Merlot. The best wine of the vintage is the first Le Pin ever produced. Other excellent wines worth mentioning are La Mission Hau...

Written Notes

I have tasted this wine at various times since 1989, and it has regularly been better and more enjoyable than its reputation suggests. Old-looking bottle, but level by the neck. Dark and brownish colour. Healthy and fresh on the nose. Elegant and open, typical Mouton bouquet which tended to grow in amplitude and articulateness. Quite neat, full-bodied and soft wine, but very forward. Not much tannins, and slightly high acidity. Somehow off-balance, a bit short and hard finish. At its peak but will hold. Certainly a good wine, but not a great one.

The 1979 Mouton Rothschild had a rich and buttery nose with coffee aromas. Its palate showed the darker side of Mouton, with nice chocolate flavors. There was presence to its palate without weight, like a good ballerina. It had a full body and the longest finish of the flight, evoking ‘warmth’ from the crowd (92).

Ruby, brick rim. Bell peppers, herbs, tobacco, coffee and a bit heavy nose. Medium acidity, mature tannins, almost gone, leaner body and fruit than nose. Dark chocolate bitterness in the finish, wood polish. Only tasted this once before, and that felt fresher and more together.
