The Story

The power and elegance of a great Pauillac. Daring, innovative and known for often being the last to harvest, Jean-Charles Cazes defined the style of Lynch-Bages in the 1930's. The wine's distinctive character earns it its place amongst Pauillac's greatest. It combines structure, finesse and elegance. It is generous in its youth and develops more complex aromas with bottle age.

Outstandingly consistent quality

The estate’s reputation as a top quality wine producer took off in 1945 after a series of exceptional vintages. Since then, Lynch-Bages has continued to produce excellent wines, even during years considered difficult in the Bordeaux region. The wine’s deep colour and tannic backbone have become part of its signature style. Jean-Michel Cazes, grandson of Jean-Charles, has worked hard to develop and refine the wine’s supple and smooth structure over the years. Vintage after vintage, the estate’s precise and excellent winemaking techniques have served to firmly establish Lynch-Bages reputation for consistent quality.

Written Notes

The 1982 Lynch Bages (sourced from Chateau) was classic Lynch all the way. I think it caused Australian John to whisper ‘oy oy oy’ under is breath! The wine was big, dark and almost medieval with a dungeon-like complexity. Beef and minerals dominated the nose, with supporting nominations to soy, salt and animal. Its earthy palate was salty and spiny with that indoor cleaner, fresh edge that reminded me of the 1989. Australian John commented how this flight was ‘a step up’

Lynch Bages 1982 turned up to be among the best wines of the evening. Potent with an amazingly scented nose of tobacco leaves and black truffle. Smooth as silk on the palate with fabulous complexity, depth and length. Awesome stuff. 98p.

(4.6 g/l total acidity; 12.7% alcohol): Dark red with a hint of garnet. A floral element lifts the very ripe aromas of kirsch and spicecake. Smooth, juicy, balanced and clean, with flavors of raspberry jam, graphite and tar exhibiting very good sweetness. Lively, balanced acidity confers precision and cut to this easygoing midweight. Finishes linear and long, with plenty of charm.

Classic in all the good ways, here you find lots of cedar, tobacco, smoke, earth and lead pencil on top of the ripe, vibrant cassis. On the palate, there is a slight rusticity and firmness to the tannins, with notes of green herbs olive, but instead of detracting, they add to the fresh, red fruits. This is drinking great today, where it should hold for at least 15 or more years.

Tuby, garnet tim, fill about 8mm below cork. Intense, sweetfruits, rich nose, scented, detailed, red berries, cassis, leather, tobacco notes, floral, seductive nose, layered. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity and intense, youthful for the vintage, ripe but still fairly cool fruit, detailed, nuanced, very long indeed. 96

Light ruby colour, slightly orange rim,on the nose cigarbox and leather, medium bodied, still lots of tannin and acidity, dark red fruits on the palate, medium finish.Needs another 10 years+.
