The Story

Château Trotte Vieille is a 1er (Premier) Grand Cru Classé Saint-Emilion and Borie-Manoux highest classified and most prestigious Château. Trottevieille is a very old estate. A pergament from the year 1453, kept at the Chateau today, shows that the funny name of Trottevieille had already been used for this estate in the 15th century. In the 14/15th century there apparently lived an elderly lady at the estate. The people from the village of Saint-Emilion called her „the old trott“ most probably due to her funny way of walking down the hill to Saint-Emilion. For this reason, in honour oft he namegivng lady, the second wine of Trottevieille is called „Dame de Trotte Vieille“.

Some of the Cabernet Franc vines here date back to the time before Phylloxera. They are thus the original French Cabernet Franc grape plants and have an age of around 150 years. The roots of these vines have made their way down into the limestone rock, sometimes deeper than 20 metres. Cabernet France often makes the majority of the blend of Trottevielle, making it one of the longest living wines.

Vintage 1983

Bordeaux / If 1981 was forgotten after 1982, the 1983 was completely eclipsed by 1982, although the harvest was large and of high quality throughout Bordeaux. Too much humidity caused by heavy rains hampered production in many places. At Margaux, some wines were even better than 1982. For example, Château Margaux announced that their 1983 surpassed the 1982. One of the best Palmers of all time was Palmer 1983.

The best wine of the vintage, however, was Le Pin – without a doubt. It’s a real bargain, not only for the quality, but also for the price at 1 550 euros per bottle, compared to Le Pin 1982 at 6,500 euros in 2020. Cheval Blanc has also done fabulously. Yquem began a new climb this year. Graves was hit by a hailstorm which resulted in a small and virtually non-existent harvest.

Written Notes

Garnet colour with brick red hue. Classic nose with an aroma reminiscent of tobacco leaf, cedar wood and hints of Cuban cigars, fine leather in the background. The nose is complemented by refined fruit reminiscent of prunes and dried blueberries backed by hints of cloves, cinnamon and cardamom. On the palate elegant with very good length, mature character with hints of freshness.
