The Story

After almost 30 years of experimentation and solid work the Marquis decided to release Sassicaia´s 1968 vintage to the open market using his cousin´s, Antinori´s distribution network in the early 1970s, with instant sensation. At a Decanter tasting of Cabernet wines in London, 1978, Sassicaia from vintage 1972 beat all the other 33 wines of France and California, and since then Sassicaia has been one of the leading wines in the world and in gr...

Wine Information

Sassicaia – Tenuta San Guido

As a student in Pisa during the 1920's, the Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta dreamed of creating a "noble" wine. Like most of Italian aristocracy at the time, his taste in wine ran strongly to fine Bordeaux. After settling with his wife, Clarice, into their Tuscan estate at Tenuta San Guido on the Mediterranean Coast, he experimented with several French grape varieties and concluded, “the bouquet I was loo...

Tasting note

Be the first one to make a 20s tasting note!

Written Notes

Appearance: Medium ruby with pronounced garnet and brick hues; clear and translucent, reflecting full maturity.

Nose: Fully developed and nuanced. Dried red cherry, cranberry, and red currant are joined by cedarwood, tobacco leaf, and worn leather. Secondary and tertiary notes dominate: forest floor, dried herbs, porcini, iron, and a subtle balsamic sweetness. The aromatics are gentle and complex rather than powerful, with understated elegance.

Palate: Dry, medium-bodied, and resolved. The palate is supple and delicate, showing mature red fruit, savory earth, and tobacco framed by softened, silky tannins. Acidity remains present but modest, giving balance without drive. The wine favors transparency and nuance over concentration, with a light, classical mouthfeel.

Finish: Medium length, tapering gracefully with dried fruit, cedar, and earthy notes.

Overall: A fully mature, fragile vintage of Sassicaia, offering tertiary complexity and elegance rather than intensity. Best appreciated for its subtlety and historical context, and to be enjoyed sooner rather than later, as further aging is unlikely to add complexity.

Serving: 17–18°C. Decant gently if needed to remove sediment; avoid extended aeration.

Pairing: Simple preparations—roast chicken, veal, pork loin, mushroom-based dishes, or aged but mild cheeses.

Drinking window (estimate): Drink now.
