The Story

Dom Ruinart cuvées: The origin of their grapes, exclusively Grand Crus, gives these cuvées, a high maturing potential provided that they are aged in optimum conditions of temperature, humidity and darkness, 10, 20 years or more depending on the vintage.

The wine will then take on more toasted, grilled and intense notes and its aromatic profile will develop as the years pass. This is a question of preference. Without exception, a Dom Ruinart...

Wine Information

The year 2013 stands out for a winter where temperatures fell below the ten-year average with periods of snow and freezing. Spring persisted with cool temperatures and was marked by heavy rainfall. Flowering began late in in July. An extremely sunny and warm summer helped the vines to offset these earlier delays. Harvest was late with Chardonnay picking beginning on October 1st. Maturity at harvest was very good, the Chardonnays combined notes...

Vintage 2013

The Champagne harvest 2013– late, but potentially outstanding

It has been another strange year for Champagne, starting with a cold, wet winter, followed by a gloomy, chilly spring with a lot of rain. Vine development started two weeks behind the ten-year average, and never made up for that lost time.

Along the way came a hot dry summer, boosting fruit quality thanks to the most sunshine ever recorded in Champagne in July and August.

Written Notes

Dom Ruinart, is a towering triumph of chiseled classicism, tense precision, and majestic linear energy. In the glass, it shows an insolently youthful, pale white-gold color shimmering with silvery-green highlights. The mousse is microscopic, lace-y, and exceptionally persistent, dancing with a quiet but relentless energy.

The bouquet is a seductive and beautifully complex masterclass in cool-climate Chardonnay development. It opens with a bright, smoky flint and firework reduction, quickly giving way to a zesty core of crunchy green apples, key lime pie, and juicy grapefruit. As it sits in the glass, the profound impact of 9 to 10 years of lees aging under cork takes over, revealing exquisite layers of roasted coffee beans, brown toast, freshly baked brioche, and honeyed pastry undertones. A delicate background whisper of white flowers, fresh walnut, and a tickle of white pepper provides an incredibly detailed frame.

On the palate, the wine strikes a breathtaking balance between laser-focused austerity and lithe, satin-smooth luxury. Driven by a selection of Grand Cru Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs (70%) and Montagne de Reims (30%), it showcases a dense, tightly wound fruit profile. Rather than being broadly mineral, it is distinctively sea-salt savory, with an intense river-pebble and oyster-shell minerality that runs vertically through the mouth. The very low Extra Brut dosage (5.5 g/L) allows the sizzling, structural 2013 acidity to take center stage, giving it pristine focus. It finishes with a never-ending, crystalline finale highlighted by a subtle, elegant touch of grape-skin tannin and refreshing citrus bitterness.

Drinking Window:

While it is showing a highly rewarding window of complexity today, this wine is built like a marathon runner, not a sprinter. Its razor-sharp acidity and dense structure mean it will reward collectors handsomely over the next two decades as it gains tertiary weight. Peak drinking window: 2026–2045+

Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs 2013 is made exclusively from Grands and Premiers Crus chardonnay, 70% of which are grown on the Côte des Blancs (Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Avize, Chouilly and Bergères-lès-Vertus) and 30% on the Montagne de Reims (Vernezay, Sillery, Taissy, Villers-Marmery). This iconic grape variety reflects the rich diversity of terroirs in the Champagne region and is present in all Maison Ruinart’s cuvées. The champagne has been ageing on lees for 9 years.

Bright yellow colour. A sedutive nose with plethora of aromas from white flowers to herbaceousness, from roasted coffee aromas to creamy notes, citrus and apples. The palate is so refined and precise. Dry and crisp with great concentration of minerals and fruitiness. A super sound champagne that charms with its diversity. You can drink now, but you'll be rewarded if cellaring this for 5-10 years. – JL 96p (April 2025)
