94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Tasted at the Château Palmer vertical in London, the 2000 Château Palmer was closed for a number of years, but it appears to be finally opening. Deep in colour, there remains a slight broodiness on the nose, although it loses its inhibitions and develops potent blackberry, strawberry and mint aromas, perhaps just a smudge of camphor. It is unashamedly rich on the entry: intense and vibrant with layers of black cherry and cassis fruit pierced by a fine line of acidity. This millennial tightens everything up towards the, finish whereupon it reverts to something much more classic in style, long and tensile. It does not quite occupy the same class as the 2005 or the imperial 2010, but it certainly has long-term potential. My advice? Give it another 4-5 years in the cellar.

The Story

Vintage after vintage, the wines of Château Palmer express our vision of an exceptional wine. We believe that it is born of the mysterious trilogy – terroir, history, memory – and all of our efforts are concentrated on bringing it into the world. Distinction, high standards and commitment are the values that guide every choice we make from the vineyard to the table where the wine is served.

Knowing
Knowing your terroir, your grapes, and your wines – this is a threefold enterprise of patient observation. What seems to be a given is in fact a matter of exacting standards at every moment. To know the terroir you have to become intimately familiar with it. We strive to know the grape variety, subsoil, and exposure of each and every plot but also of each and every row within the plot, as we regard every vine as a unique individual. To know our grapes well, we closely monitor their development until maturity. To know our wines, we taste the batches, the vats, the barrels, and the bottles again and again.

Understanding
Progress in œnology has provided us with insight into the development of wines. Progress in agronomy has given us a better understanding of the life of our vineyards. This makes for more precision in our interventions as much in the winery as in the vineyards. Applying the best technical innovations in a spirit of reconciliation between science and craftsmanship, we use all relevant means to reveal the unique character of the Palmer terroir with each new vintage.

Creating
With the grapes that nature offers us, our job is to create the best possible wine. Is this craftsmanship or artistry? No doubt both. Like skilled craftspeople that love their trade, we select and blend the batches with meticulous care. And like artists, we let ourselves be swept away by the work that is born, as it imposes itself upon our will, surprises, amazes and transcends us.

Kindling desire
Ultimately our goal is to make Château Palmer wines as desirable as can be. To achieve this, everything we do, whether we work in the vineyard, the winery, or in the offices, is informed by high standards and a sense of detail Nothing is left to chance, not the choice of paper for a label, or that of an etching for the wood crates, or of a theme for a reception.

Wine Information

Characteristics of the vintage
Due to the particularly damp and humid conditions that prevailed in spring, all vine growers were particularly vigilant in the first part of the year. In fact, summer only really came in mid July, although from then the grapes ripened gently and slowly.
Drought conditions persisted right up to harvest time and although the levels of sugar did not quite reach those of 1999, the richness and maturity of the phenolic compounds was astonishing.

The quality of the fruit, along with immensely ripe tannins and sufficient acidity have produced a truly great Margaux with a long life expectancy.

Harvest dates: from 09/21/2000 to 10/07/2000

Blend

Cabernet Sauvignon: 53%
Merlot: 47%

Tasting notes from Enrico Bernardo, 12/01/2011:

Rich, concentrated ruby-red colour with deep purple highlights.
Starting to show its age on the nose, featuring overtones of graphite, plum, and eucalyptus.
Classic flavour profile with a tannic aftertaste. Rich and somewhat astringent, but above all tannic and long.

Tasting notes from Georges Lepré, 02/04/2012:

Very deep purple

Powerful, imperious, complex nose with notes of black currant, plum, crystallized fruit, spices, smoke, cigar box, cedar, leather, mint and forest floor.

Attacks with an imposing palate, then sumptuous very high quality tannins take over enrobed in gorgeous ripe fruit – the whole sustained by impeccable freshness. The lovely richness persists to the long particularly tasty finish.

Historical in every respect, this vintage is already enjoyable. It will retain all its seductive powers for at least thirty years. Must be decanted two hours before serving.

Vuosikerta 2000

Weather conditions / The 2000 vintage was proclaimed from the start as one of the best vintages of modern times. In the spring of 2003, I had many opportunities to find out if we really had a true dream vintage on our hands.

During the 2000 harvest, while doing a “personal inspection” in the vineyards, I noticed that something extraordinary was on the way. The grapes looked extremely healthy.

While the sorting table was rolling, I observed that there were few leaves, stems and weeds among the grapes. This is why sorting the grapes was so easy and quick. This must be one of the characteristics of the 2000 vintage, because normally even great vintages require a lot of work at the sorting table.

The 2000 vintage is a classic, extravagant and extremely long Bordeaux with dark and extremely dense wines, which have a huge concentration of fruit, length and superbly concentrated tannins. The tannin is not allowed to dominate, as it is well enveloped by the fruit. A scent of under-ripeness is only present in a few wines. One of the hallmarks of this vintage is an intense, deep aroma of dark berries, such as blueberries, blackberries and black cherries.

All red grape varieties have reached perfect maturity, including Bordeaux's most temperamental and unruly grape variety, Petit Verdot. Petit Verdot brings to wines the long-awaited addition of backbone and power.

Additionally, the grapes for whites, such as Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle, ripened perfectly and produced extremely fine dry white wines. The sweet white wines have unfortunately transformed into some light, elegant and charming wines, based 100% on the September harvest. From October 11, it rained a lot in Bordeaux and this continued until the end of the year.

Rich, full, generous style with broad mid palate and plenty of ripe flavours. This wine is still so young even after 12 years of ageing. The tannins are firm and the flavours still developing. This is a wine for longer term ageing. A dense, layered wine showing lots of promise for the future, but not just yet. (95)

The Wine Cellar Insider, Jeff LEVE, 05/05/2010
« This begins with an intense display of black fruit and black raspberry scents along with truffles, flowers, earth and a hint of citrus oil. The wine has great freshness and depth along with an intensity of flavor that keeps you interested. »

http://www.jancisrobinson.com, Jancis Robinson, 09/14/2009
« Deep dark ruby. Some cedary notes over the pure fine cassis but also a hint of very sweet damson. Cedary purity though fully ripe. Thick, rich and opulent with fine, chocolate-smooth tannins. Rich and firm but beatifully balanced. Harmony and proportion. Leathery in aroma and texture but not at all tough just adding a savoury grainy edge. Then finishes fresh and with a fine, attractive dryness – like a smooth dry handshake. Hint of undergrowth on the long finish.

« Rich, ripe, dense. Very firm tannins. Toough, but will come round. Excellent lenght. »

Wine International, Derek Smedley MW, 10/01/2005
« Very rich and full with a real depth of flavour. This has power and complexity. Firm but ripe tannins and good lenght. »

Wine International, Fiona Morrison MW, 10/01/2005
« Good dark colour. Brilliant dark chocolate scented tannins. Lashings of new oak but well balanced. »

Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate, Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate, 09/01/2005
