The Story

Palmer and its Alter Ego are two nuanced expressions of the Château Palmer terroir, two interpretations of the variations offered by the climatic conditions of the vintage. These variations can be likened, in music, to symphonic pieces and their jazz adaptations, in the visual arts, to a classic painting and a contemporary rendering of the same subject, and, in literature, to an epic narrative in alexandrine verse and a prose poem.

Vintage 2017

Bordeaux 2017 - A year of contrast

Life is not fair and neither is nature. As the earth warms, flowering becomes earlier and the risk of frost damage increases. Few winemakers remember the frosts of 1991, but their legacy is still haunting. When meteorologists predicted a cold blast on the nights of April 27 and 28, there was a real sense of panic. Written Notes

Tasted in November 2021.  53% Merlot, 41% C. Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot. Spicy dark berries on the nose, lighter on the palate than the 2019 version, more elegant and velvety texture. A seductive effort.

Light blackcurrant fruit, subtle and primary at first on the nose. There's graphite and dark chocolate too, with acidity that is right at the top end of balanced, but medium-grained tannins to go with it. This is the lighter side of bordeaux, and I'm not sure if there is any of the typical Margaux florality, but there's certainly a lot to enjoy here, and it's pleasingly low-octane by modern standards. • 90p

Dark purple red with violet hue and almost black core. Ripe nose with aroma reminiscent of blackberries and prunes, hints of chocolate in the background. On the palate well structured with ripe tannins, juicy fruit and discreet spiciness. Good length. 90
