The Story

Vintage after vintage, the wines of Château Palmer express our vision of an exceptional wine. We believe that it is born of the mysterious trilogy – terroir, history, memory – and all of our efforts are concentrated on bringing it into the world. Distinction, high standards and commitment are the values that guide every choice we make from the vineyard to the table where the wine is served.

Knowing
Knowing your terroir, your grapes, and your wines – this is a threefold enterprise of patient observation. What seems to be a given is in fact a matter of exacting standards at every moment. To know the terroir you have to become intimately familiar with it. We strive to know the grape variety, subsoil, and exposure of each and every plot but also of each and every row within the plot, as we regard every vine as a unique individual. To know our grapes well, we closely monitor their development until maturity. To know our wines, we taste the batches, the vats, the barrels, and the bottles again and again.

Understanding
Progress in œnology has provided us with insight into the development of wines. Progress in agronomy has given us a better understanding of the life of our vineyards. This makes for more precision in our interventions as much in the winery as in the vineyards. Applying the best technical innovations in a spirit of reconciliation between science and craftsmanship, we use all relevant means to reveal the unique character of the Palmer terroir with each new vintage.

Creating
With the grapes that nature offers us, our job is to create the best possible wine. Is this craftsmanship or artistry? No doubt both. Like skilled craftspeople that love their trade, we select and blend the batches with meticulous care. And like artists, we let ourselves be swept away by the work that is born, as it imposes itself upon our will, surprises, amazes and transcends us.

Kindling desire
Ultimately our goal is to make Château Palmer wines as desirable as can be. To achieve this, everything we do, whether we work in the vineyard, the winery, or in the offices, is informed by high standards and a sense of detail Nothing is left to chance, not the choice of paper for a label, or that of an etching for the wood crates, or of a theme for a reception.

Wine Information

Characteristics of the vintage

Perfect weather lasted throughout the year and through the harvest . After three months of sunshine and high temperatures in June, July and August, some rain and cooler weather came in September, although this was in no way harmful to the crop. By the time picking began, the weather was fine again; the grapes had reached optimum maturity and were in perfect condition

The wines from the 1995 vintage are remarkable for their rich, tannic structure without a trace of astringency.

Harvest dates: from 09/18/1995 to 10/02/1995

Tasting

Tasting notes from Enrico Bernardo, 12/01/2011:

Beautiful ruby-red colour with garnet-red highlights.
Fruity, Mediterranean nose. More shy than the 1998, but the bouquet is more sunny, with overtones of tomato, cherry, and red apple.
Classic, round, broad-based, generous, and intense on the palate. Low acidity but more character.

Tasting notes from Georges Lepré, 02/04/2009:

The inky color has purple highlights.

Aromatically it explodes with blackcurrants, blackberries, figs, prunes, gingerbread, sandalwood, mint, cedar, leather, and truffle…

The attack shows a flamboyantly gothic architecture: opulent fruit, an elegant tannic structure, ideal acidity, finishing with a long-lasting flavor and perfect control… This combination contributes to its power and elegance. Today the components are not entirely incorporated, but such is the law of great bottles: patience.

Expect its peak between 2010 and 2030.

« Deep garnet. Really quite floral (violets and floral dried herbs) but also lots of dark fruit. Very firm and muscular and dense. Powerful but still aromatic. Some dried fruits, even a savoury dark toffee/molasses note. Also cedary and fresh and cigar box. Slight dustiness. Really firm, tannins a little dry on the finish and more liquorice as it opens up. Not ready yet.

Falstaff, Peter Moser, 11/01/2006

Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate, Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate, 09/01/2005
« Le Palmer 1995 est dominé par le merlot (il en contient 43%). Faible en acidité et charnu, il séduira dès son plus jeune âge grâce à son opulence fabuleuse, mais ne se conservera pas moins de belle manière. D'un rubis-pourpre foncé, il dégage des arômes de chêne neuf fumé et grillé, mêlés d'un généreux fruité de cerise confiturée aux nuances chocolatées et florales. Ce vin impressionnant, moyennement corsé et charnu, est très élégant. »

Wine International, Richard Bampfield, 05/01/2005
« Very deep and relatively undeveloped with cassis fruit and new oak. Very youthful and full of fruit this is bright, vibrant and harmonious. »

Wine News, Abraham Horowitz, 04/01/2004
« Deep ruby hue. Rich scents of black cherry and plum with hints of mocha and leather. Ripe tannins and juicy flavors of raspberry and wild cherry. Raspberry marks the clean finish. »

Vintage 1995

Bordeaux / An excellent year for both sides of the Gironde and just the vintage that Bordeaux needed after the rain affected vintages of the previous 4 years. A mild winter and early spring was followed by a dry, hot summer. It did rain in early September but the rain was less than in the previous 4 vintages and, crucially, there was perfect weather from September 20th through to October.

Quality is high across all levels and appellations, with the Merlot-dominated wines of St-Emilion andPomerol being particularly successful. The best wines are very ripe and display good concentration and structure.

Written Notes

Deep ruby, almost opaque colour. Extremely refined nose with many layers – blackcurrants, cedar, cigars, tobacco, roasted coffee, hints of capsicum. Restrained medium-bodied palate shows moderately high acidity, refined powdery tannins and deliciously ripe black fruit character. The concentrated texture holds elegant touches of spicy and toasty oak flavours. Long lingering mineral rich finish. Aristocratic style of Margaux par excellence. Truly classic wine benefiting from further ageing for a decade or two but is lovely already.

  • 94p

Consistent notes. Deep red. Powerful nose of ripe blackcurrants and raspberries. On the palate it was chewy, well-constructed with fine balance and fine aftertaste. This was a bit lighter wine than usual for the property, but nevertheless a wine you really would enjoy without any complaints. This one should keep for additional 10-15 years.

  • 92p
Bright ruby. Fruity, floral, cassis and blueberries. Scented and layered. Ads with air. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity and elegant, lively, long. Some felt quite strongly that this bottle was corked but even after six hours in the glass, there was no trace of any cork taint, and even the most bombastic tasters went silence.
