The Story
THE CREATION
The best batches are carefully selected, vinified and aged separately. Only some ten crus deserve this special treatment: the very best villages of the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs. Among them we find a predominance of Pinot Noir (64%) which marks the House’s style. Time is needed to reveal the fullness of Nature’s bounty. Ageing on the lees is patiently continued for five years. When the wine is judged to be ready, the dosage with a very low sugar content of 6g/l brings it out without altering it. For all these reasons G.H.MUMM Millésimé is a wine for laying down, that can be kept in a cellar for some ten years.

The history of the terroir
2002 was a year of sunshine: the rich and powerful Grands Crus Pinots Noirs of Verzenay and Verzy are balanced by the lightness of the Côte des Blancs Chardonnays.
Intensity, freshness, balance, the style of the 2002 Millésime, the 54th vintage of the House, is in the true lineage of the G.H.MUMM wine character.
The elaboration
The best grapes were carefully selected and separately fermented and bred. Less than ten crus received this special treatment, the elite of the villages of the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs. Predominant amongst them were the Pinots Noirs (68%), the distinctive signature of the House style. It took time to reveal this bounteous gift of Nature. The wine was left patiently to mature on the lees for 5 years. When it was deemed ready, a low dosage (6g/l) was to bring out the wine’s inherent character. For all these reasons, G.H.MUMM Millésimé has a good ageing potential, one that can be kept cellared for some 10 years.
Vuosikerta 2002
A cold winter and a mild late spring cued for a perfect June allowing early and fast flowering. Outstanding weather conditions prevailed and the season went on without dramatic turns. Rains in August raised concerns regarding gray rot, but finally sunshine and dry conditions throughout September resulted in an abundant crop of largely healthy fruit (11,930 kg/ha). Dehydration due to wind further aided in achieving perfect ripeness and additional concentration. This, and the cool nights, helped in retaining fresh acidity and, despite the ripeness (10.3% potential alcohol), the wines did not suffer from heaviness or a lack of life. A near-perfect vintage, which produced balanced Champagnes consistently around the region. The best show an impeccable combination of freshness, power, structure and finesse. However, some have matured aromatically quicker than expected and are already past their peak. 2002 produced an abundance of spectacular champagnes, such as Dom Pérignon (the entire range), Krug Vintage and Clos du Mesnil, Piper-Heidsieck Rare, Louis Roederer Cristal and Cristal Rosé, Ruinart Dom Ruinart and Dom Ruinart Rosé, Salon Le Mesnil and Taittinger Comtes de Champagne, to name a few.
