The Story

Cuvee R. Lalou is named for Rene Lalou, a former president of G.H. Mumm, a house that prides itself on using grapes from the oldest and most distinguished vineyards in France's Champagne region. While G.H. Mumm made its first fine champagne in 1827, Cuvee R. Lalou is only released in the very best years; there have been just nine vintages since Lalou first produced it in 1966. The 1985 Cuvee R. Lalou is ranked as one of the top 20 vintages of ...

Wine Information

The Mumm RSRV Lalou 2008 cuvee is a legendary champagne, blended from 100% Grand Cru wines. It is sourced exclusively from the Maison Mumm vineyards, its historic and emblematic plots. Of the 12 specific plots in the Maison Mumm vineyard, equally distributed between Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims and Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs, seven were selected for the unique blend of RSRV Lalou 2006 (Les Bionnes, Les Crupots, Les Briquettes...

Vintage 2008

2008 -The Champagne vintage set to make history!

A first taste of leading winemakers’ 2008 champagnes reveals a miraculous vintage, bubbling with potential, which – whisper it – might just prove the greatest in living memory.

2008 was not, by any standards, a vintage year for the financial world. And for the greater part of it, 2008 was a pretty poor year for Champagne too: spring was freezing, summer gloomy and overcast. But then, aroun...

Written Notes

Bright, green yellow colour. Fresh, perfumey, white flower nose with peach, strawberry brioche with vanilla custard. Dry, extremely crisp, refined mousse, concentrated and focused. Lovely toastiness and minerailty in sophisticated silky palate. Lingering finish shows great vibrancy and tension. – JL 95p. (3/2023)

Inside Information

The wines of Cuvee Lalou are selected from the best of Maison Mumm’s own vineyards, both in the Cote des Blanc and the Montagne de Reims. Aged for 10 years before release, it is truly one if the undiscovered gems in the Mumm stable. The nose offers aromas of toast with quince jam, pineapple, bruised apple and a hint of freshly baked apple pie. On the palate this wine needs time to breath, open up and show the lovely richness that lies behind the linear style of the wine. Notes of caraway, rosemary and red apple come through on the finish. This is a wine to be enjoyed with a great meal.
