Wine Description
The Story
The product of a centuries-old champagne-making tradition, Demi-Sec reflected the tastes of 19th century consumers who enjoyed very sweet wine, sometimes exceeding 150g/l of sugar. Updated for today's taste, G.H.MUMM Demi-Sec is the House's gourmet signature champagne: a cuvée that perpetuates the fine tradition of dessert champagnes.
THE HISTORY BEHIND THE DEMI-SEC
Demi-Sec champagnes are the original champagne product, the fruit of a longstanding tradition. They complied with the tastes of 19th-century consumers, with a sugar content that sometimes exceeded 150g/l (as opposed to 6g for the iconic G.H.MUMM Cordon Rouge of today)!
The heady cuvée that was G.H.MUMM’s signature delight in 1888 has now been adapted to suit modern palates, offering connoisseurs the possibility of appreciating a sweeter champagne that perpetuates the tradition of dessert champagnes.
G.H.MUMM Demi-Sec is a supremely unique wine that will delight champagne lovers everywhere with its fruity, well-rounded and generous taste.
Wine Information
The elaboration
Here, the skill of blending combines with the subtle art of dosage – finding the equilibrium between too much and too little ... The Cellar Master has the dual responsibility of finding a balance between complexity of flavour, richness and elegance. Some forty crus go into the formation of a unique blend in the G.H.MUMM range. Dominated by a high proportion of Pinot Meunier (60%), which gives it an intense fruitiness, the cuvée is set off by a touch of Chardonnay and by mature reserve wines, primarily Pinots. The addition of a 40g/l liqueur d’expédition gives G.H.MUMM Demi-Sec a warm and controlled sweetness.
The style: over to the Cellar Master
“This well-rounded champagne is specially blended to ensure balance, generosity and lasting freshness.”
The tasting ritual
As its history shows, G.H.MUMM Demi-Sec is the ideal accompaniment for desserts and sweet things of all kinds. A plate of macaroons on the terrace, a champagne fruit sabayon, an apricot crumble ... People can find their own favourites. And those who are prepared to experiment may discover a surprising union of sweet and savoury with a foie gras or a soft blue cheese.
The history: champagne 19th-century style
Little known in France, demi-sec champagne is a distinctive wine that deserves to be rediscovered. It is probably the closest to how champagne was experienced a century ago: a time when wine lovers sought out wines that were rich to the point of sweetness. Tastes could also differ from one country to another. For example, the Russians had a taste for champagnes that were so sweet that we would nowadays consider them liqueurs ...
While today's taste tends towards champagnes with less and less sugar, demi-sec maintains its own place amongst G.H.MUMM cuvées as a perfect accompaniment for desserts, a sweet among sweets ...
