The Tb points given to this wine are the world’s most valid and most up-to-date evaluation of the quality of the wine. Tastingbook points are formed by the Tastingbook algorithm which takes into account the wine ratings of the world's 50 best-known professional wine critics, wine ratings by thousands of tastingbook’s professionals and users, the generally recognised vintage quality and reputation of the vineyard and winery. Wine needs at least five professional ratings to get the Tb score. Tastingbook.com is the world's largest wine information service which is an unbiased, non-commercial and free for everyone.

The Story

Graham's has a reputation as a producer of outstanding Vintage Port for well over a century. These wines are renowned for their remarkable richness, concentration and firm tannic structure: a combination which yields impressive longevity. Graham's Vintage Ports consistently attain the highest ratings in tastings and invariably attract very high bids at fine wine auctions.

Vintage Ports are only made in years of exceptionally high quality harvests, which on average occur two or three times in a decade. The weather in the vineyards is the principal determining factor: conditions must be ideal throughout the growing season, as well as during the subsequent harvest.

Graham's extraordinary quality is the result of the unique characteristics of the five vineyards that contribute to the Vintage Port.

Graham's declares a Vintage Port only in exceptional years, perhaps three times in a decade, and in the intervening years may produce a Quinta Vintage Ports from Quinta dos Malvedos or Quinta do Tua. These Quinta Vintage Ports are aged in our cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia for 10 years or more after harvest, before being released to the market, ready for enjoyment.

Graham’s Vintage Ports are outstanding for their consistent quality and long life. James Suckling’s series of notes for old vintages tasted in 1990 confirm this – how many wines, after 40 or more years, are rated so highly and noted as “will improve with age” ?

Wine Information

Symington Family Tasting Room, 2014

Graham’s 2000 Vintage displays a deep ruby colour. On the nose it is packed with aromas of dark fruits such as plums and blackberries. On the palate it has the typical Graham richness and concentration, full-bodied, with great length and intensity on the finish. Approachable now but is still 4 to 5 years from its prime, after which it will age superbly for decades.

Very tiny crop. Just 650 g per vine on average (they usually harvest 850 g per vine from Malvedos – their lowest yielding, most consistently cropping quinta). Intense and liqueur-like on the nose. Very strong minty note. Dry finish with some tannins still evident. Very pure and clean. 17.5+/20 points

Saturated black-ruby. Superripe, bottomless nose of black fruits, mocha, bitter chocolate and flowers. Hugely sweet, dense and rich. A port of outstanding opulence and creamy texture; deceptively easy to taste. Substantial, sweet, spreading tannins are buried under a wave of fruit. Extremely long, fruit-driven finish.

Graham is a shining example of an established Port house pushing the boat out to make even better wines through better viticulture and wine-making methodology. This is the greatest young Vintage Port from Graham I have ever tasted, and perhaps it will be better in the long term than the legendary 1948. It smells like freshly picked orchids, with loads of ripe, clean fruit and then turns full-bodied, medium-sweet and very powerful in the mouth with big velvety tannins. It lasts for minutes on your palate. There’s great balance and class to this young Vintage port. Best after 2014.

Ruby. Blackberries and spices, liquorice, nuanced, dates nose, cigars. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, dark fruity, figs and dates, nuanced, layered, long. 93

In 2000 Douro Valley enjoyed of mild and dry winter. The spring rain during the flowering caused casualities on the crop size. Nevertheless the hot and dry summer not only matured the grapes but made them extremely concentrated yielding one of the most glorious vintages for decades. Opaque, intense, purple colour. Very intense nose full of dark fruits like brambles and blueberries, hints of floral aromas, sweet spicies and liquorice. Full-bodied, rich and intense texture of ripe dark fruits, lovely acidity and very intense, powdery firm tannic structure. High alcohol combines well with intense fruit and spicies forming long warming balanced elegant finish with beautiful finesse. Could it be because of soft treading of the robotic lagares that the wine stands out so refine and elegant and surprisingly drinkable already. Anyway this exquisite wine will grow absolutely into a superb wine with age.
