The Story

Time is expressed in Opus One by the character of the vintage: sometimes with a personality that is highly defined and sometimes with a shade of difference quite subtle from other vintages.  Through the minds and hands of the vineyard workers we capture time and the essence of the season – coaxing concentration and tempering abundance.

Very deep crimson. Quite a meaty nose and then very sweet palate entry. Marked acidity, relatively lean. Not quite charming – but is this a question of time? Fresh and lively. But not especially long. First vintage actually at the Opus winery. When they pressed they saw there was lots of sugar left in the whole berry fermentation so long fermentation really added to the complexity of the wine. An elegant understated model for Michael Silacci to build towards.

Dark red with an amber rim. Wild, musky, fully resolved aromas and flavors of plum, currant, spices and leather, plus a suggestion of stewed tomato. Then surprisingly alive, even a bit high-pitched, on the palate, showing slightly tart acidity and good energy but only moderate nuance and pliancy. (A second bottle of this wine was a bit more truffley and less lively.) (13.4% alcohol; this was the first vintage made in today's Opus One winery)
