The Story

Time is expressed in Opus One by the character of the vintage: sometimes with a personality that is highly defined and sometimes with a shade of difference quite subtle from other vintages.  Through the minds and hands of the vineyard workers we capture time and the essence of the season – coaxing concentration and tempering abundance.

Place is often defined as terroir and denotes the special characteristics that geography, geology and climate bestow upon a vineyard.  Place is best expressed in the mouthfeel of Opus One; it is the balance of power and finesse, structure and texture.

Complementing both time and place is the essential human element: the attitude, will and soulful attention embodied in the team of individuals who prune, harvest, cellar and embrace the vision of our founding partners.

Written Notes

A voluptuous garnet, the 2005 Opus One offers concentrated aromas of blueberry, red roses, white truffle, licorice and nutmeg. A silky entry combines with a moderately soft mid-palate to express supple texture and a fine balance of fruit and acidity. Flavors of cassis, black olives, raspberry and dark chocolate culminate in a long and luscious finish.

Frequent spring rains through the month of May— the wettest May on record— led to a year of cool temperatures and slow ripening. Counted from the day the grape flowers bloom to the first day of harvest, the ripening period was the longest on record for Opus One’s vineyards. The absence of heat spells from July through October allowed a late harvest that began on September 21st and ended on November 2nd— a full month later than the preceding vintage.

Deep ruby. Scented, fruity, cassis and floral notes, quite intense, some mint and spices on the nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, elegant, lively, refreshing, long and nuanced, layered. 95
