The Wine AdvocateAuthor: Stephan Reinhardt "Pol Roger's brightly colored, white-golden NV Pure Extra Brut is an undosed blend of equal parts of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier that has been aged four years on the lees. This excellent sparkling wine offers a pure, fresh, precise and yeasty bouquet of white fruits intertwined with lemon aromas, some notes of freshly baked rye bread and very subtle smoky flavors (although the wine has never seen any oak). The mousse is as fine and delicate as you can expect from a Pol Roger, and so is the complexity and refined elegance of this Champagne; it is is truly dry, straight and fresh, but also intense, firmly structured and reveals a nice iodine flavor in the long finish. This wine is as subtle as it is complex, and you should give it a second chance if you tend to underrate the first sip. The finish is really remarkable in its tightness, length and purity. Try it with shellfish!"

The Story
Pol Roger Pure has been created to complete the Pol Roger range of champagnes and to offer new sensations to connoisseurs.
Brought out in 2008, this cuvée is above all an exercise in the House style, where we have endeavoured to achieve a wine in its most natural state whilst respecting the spirit of the different champagnes we produce.Seeking to closely guard the authentic expression of the diversity of terroirs, this undosed champagne is produced from the perfect balance between the three grape varieties, blended in equal proportions. The achievement of such a balance and structure has been the fruit of a long lasting labour. The choice of the cuvées for blending and of the ageing period of at least four years required all the rigour reflected in this wine.
Vinification: Once harvested, the grapes are immediately and delicately pressed. The must undergoes a first débourbage (settling) at the press house and a second in our winery, à froid (at 6°C) over a 24 hour period. The alcoholic fermentation takes place at a low temperature (18°C) in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with each variety and the production of each village kept separate until final blending. All our wines go through a malolactic fermentation. After tasting, blending and bottling, the secondary fermentation (prise de mousse) and maturing take place in the cool atmosphere of our cellars located 33 metres below street level. Each bottle is given a traditional remuage (hand riddling) before disgorging and dosage, and the wines rest for a minimum of three months before being released.
Wine Information
Pol Roger recently celebrated its 150th anniversary and is perhaps best known as Winston Churchill's favourite Champagne.
Established in 1849, Champagne Pol Roger remains family-owned and proudly independent to this day. Pol Roger, the 1831 born founder of the house, had lived in the Grand Cru village of Aÿ his whole childhood. The whole family supported the enterprise of their son.
From early on Pol Roger focused in exports, and the English market was the most important one from the beginning. The commercial success of the company had its roots in the business model where they produced other champagne brands in the Pol Roger facilities.
Pol Roger is one of the few remaining family owned Grande Marque champagne businesses. Christian de Billy’s son Hubert is actively involved in the company but Pol Roger recently recruited their first managers, Patrice Noyelle and Laurent d’Harcourt, from outside the family.
Extensive vineyard holdings of 89 ha, and perfected skills in the art of blending hold the secret to the quality. The entire board of directors and many family members participate to the blending decisions. The cellars extend some 7 kilometres beneath the streets of Epernay and are carved out of the local chalk over three levels. Total production at Pol Roger is in the region of 1.5 million bottles per annum,
