The Story

Yalumba The Octavius has established a reputation as one of Australia's icon Shiraz wines, an amazing feat considering the first release was the 1990 vintage. In addition to being sourced from a number of very old vineyards in the Barossa, The Octavius is matured in American and French oak 'octaves' of 100 litre capacity. It is the only red wine in the world that is matured in such small barrels. The secret of the wine not becoming overpowered by the oak lies in the wood which is seasoned at Yalumba's own on-site cooperage for three to five years before the octaves are crafted. Yalumba is one of a select few wineries in the world who boast their own coopers practising the ancient craft of barrel making.

Wine Information

The 1998 vintage in the Barossa was nothing short of outstanding. Near-perfect growing conditions saw grapes achieve maximum ripeness and flavour. Yalumba's The Octavius 1998 was once again sourced from dry grown old bushvines that produced low crops (1-2 tonne/acre) of intensely rich and powerful Shiraz fruit. The resulting wine is dense red in colour with a complex nose of spice, pepper, fruitcake, coffee bean, violet and vanillin toasty oak. The palate is truly intense with concentrated layers of plum, licorice and black olives balanced by fine-grained tannins. This wine will see through to the long term and has at least 10 years of cellaring potential.

Written Notes

Opaque, blueberry colour. Very masculine, cocoa, dark chocolate, burnt wood, sweet spicies, varnish. Full-bodied, moderately low acidity, ripe tannins, jammed fruit, alcohol dominates with toasty cocoa flavours. Long port-like finish. One dimensional but drinking nicely now. No further ageing.
