The Story

Before the 2005 vintage the resource for the Eden Valley Viognier has been largely from the various blocks of Viognier planted on the Vaughan vineyard. In 2005 two additional good quality Viognier vineyards became available, adding yet another dimension to the final wine.

Wine Information

Vintage 2012 saw approximately 60% of the fruit gently pressed directly to barrels, with the remaining 30% being pressed in a stainless steel tank. The juice was handled with passive oxidation, allowing the wine to ferment with indigenous yeasts, natural to the vineyard.

The wine was left on lees, and underwent regular batonnage for 10 months to increase the complexity and creaminess of the wine and further heightened the palate weight.

Vintage 2012

Lower-than-average yields in Australia, as across much of Europe. This was blamed on high winds, drought and low fruitfulness resulting from the poor 2011 vintage. Quality, however, was much better than in the exceptionally damp 2011, with South Australia avoiding some of the weather extremes experienced by other states. Strong varietal typicality is a commonly cited feature of the 2012 crop.

Written Notes

The last of a quartet of viogniers from the varieties saviour in Australia, Yalumba. You can find the Y Series, Organic and Virgilius elsewhere on this site.

There's a lime and cream aspect on opening, followed by peach skins, apricot kernel. Somewhat delicate, not overbearing.

Textural, spicy, rich - has a fair degree of presence. Touches of white pepper, brown spice and a many layered textural presence. Concludes with a little pickled ginger, length building, spice lingering. Will go another 2-3 years I reckon. 91
