Yalumba Paradox Shiraz 2010

94 points - "A refined Barossa shiraz, fragrant and complex with raspberry, plum, spice and tar aromas. It has lovely flow and integration of flavours, medium body, and a dry tannin signature. (Cork; 13.5 per cent alcohol.) Ageing? Drink over six years. Food ideas Beef fillet."

93 points - "The fish the John West rejects...This was meant to be slotted into the Single Site range of Yalumba wines but became its own thing after not fitting into the broadening caste system of the wine hierarchy at Yalumba. It's naturally fermented and sent to mostly older oak vessels for maturity. It stands out from a line-up of 'other' Yalumba wines I was working through.

It feels really unadorned and fruit-driven but there's many layers to the grapes on show. Smells inky, a sense of depth and darkness, without definition, but a whiff of spice trails from the glass too. Fleshiness and an expansive feel in the palate, there's sweetness of fruit, a touch of nutty savouriness, some dusty tannins lingering on the finish, and a feel of ease of drinking all on show. It's warm without heat and yet shows freshness in acidity too. Curious wine; will repay a big glass and something charry on the table to nibble on."

95 points - "Strong red-purple; from the Kalimna district, open-fermented in old 2250-litre oak vats and matured in one-and two-year-old French barriques. This is a very good shiraz, one (unintended) paradox a heavyweight bottle and a very ordinary short cork; the more important paradox is the delightful intensity of the savoury black fruits achieved with sub-13% alcohol, the length of the palate also excellent."

92 points - "This is an interesting experiment of sorts from the folks at Yalumba - the finished alcohol level is unusually low at just 12.9%. Tart cherry and raspberry flavors are underscored by dark chocolate shadings. Despite the moderate alcohol level, the wine gives the impression of ample weight and displays fine, elegantly silky tannins."

PARADOX: An opinion or statement contrary to received opinion. The Paradox is not what you might expect from a wine from the Northern Barossa. It’s not the high octane, lots of new oak stereotypical Northern Barossa Shiraz, but rather a softer more gentle, velvet-like and savoury style of wine.

Wine Information

An inky, crimson wine. Aromas full of mixed spice and crushed black pepper, violets, fennel and hints of blueberries. The palate is like layers of velvet, with great structure showing lush red berries, olives and anise. Finishing savoury and driven by fine powdery tannins.
