The Story

Of the 1,000 hectares making up the Vega Sicilia estate, 210 are used for wine growing, and there are 19 soil-types divided for management purposes into 52 plots with very specific characteristics. The influence of the flow of the river Duero and the passage of time have been vital in forming these soils.

70 of these hectares are employed to produce Unico. A unique, magical estate which, along with extraordinary management of the vineyard, ...

Unico – Bodegas Vega Sicilia

Bodegas Vega Sicilia Unico is still “a prophet in its own land”, Spain, and only a small part of the production leaves the country to be sold abroad. The production of Unico varies from 30.000 to 100.000 bottles depending on the year. The commercial success of Unico is nevertheless decided beforehand regardless of the amount produced, since each vintage is already sold out before the bottling. Yet 700 people a...

Written Notes

A dusty, almost unrecognizable bottle was found in a wine shop on a small side street in Barcelona. The seller assured it to be Unico from 1959. The level of the wine was high shoulder, color was dark red and clear, and since the price was also right the bottle traveled with me to Helsinki. I opened it a few years later in a Vine Club tasting, and the cork proved the vintage right. The bouquet was not so typical to Unico; sweet, raisiny and youthful. On the palate the wine felt very heavy, generously intensive and exceedingly chocolaty. This most vivid and vital wine was very well balanced and enough multidimensional to be given the mark "great". It seemed to even improve while in the glass, and was at its best two hours after the decanting. An experience worth its reputation!

Unico! We had four vintages on tap between 1959 and 1965, and the glove fit except for John Holmes. We started with a superb 1959 Vega Sicilia Unico. Coffee, yogurt and mocha were all spilling out of its nose, soon joined thereafter by great gingerbread and gumdrop. This nose was beyond exotic, like a half Brazilian, half Chinese girl who went to college in London. This vintage was Burgundian in character, except for the so much coffee thing happening. There was a nice finish to this outstanding wine, which kept getting better. The Earlycomer noted ‘butterscotch candy.’ We all know what happened next (96).

Moderately-dark ruby colour. Intense nose that delivers ripe dark fruit and sweet and spicy aromas. A firm, medium-bodied palate that has a pungent acidity and mouthdrying tannins. Delicate texture of fruitiness. Still an energetic and youthful wine. The high level of alcohol gives a round and warming sensation at the end. JL 90p
