The Story

Of the 1,000 hectares making up the Vega Sicilia estate, 210 are used for wine growing, and there are 19 soil-types divided for management purposes into 52 plots with very specific characteristics. The influence of the flow of the river Duero and the passage of time have been vital in forming these soils.

Written Notes

Good looking normal size bottle, in an perfect condition and has by the neck level. Colour is brick red, full and mature. On the nose it is intense, open, mature, fresh, seductive, rich and charming. The taste is ripe, refined, harmonious, with silky tannins, full-bodied, with perfectly balanced, well-structured, good texture structure and mature. On the palate it is layered and has meaty, creamy, coffee, blackberry, glycerin, herbs, cedar, tobacco, tropical fruits, spice and smoky flavours. The finish is long, extensive, smooth, flavorful and vibrant. This wine is sophisticated, transparent and impressive. I paid around 1k-3k€ a bottle. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 10-15 years and decant at least 2h before tasting. Good value for money.

Lovely silky texture on this 72-year-old wine under its original cork. Dried autumn leaves accented with sweet oak and vanilla. Incredibly fresh and lively; impressive.

Lustrous dark ruby with wonderful evolution. Mint is the top note. Great breadth of fine fruit. Quite staggering to think of the circumstances in which this marvel was made. This must be the best 1942 ever. So vital and straight backed with real refinement. Such purity. Race and line par excellence. Keeps opening out on the finish. Tasted: 19-Jun-2012

Brick red colour. Excellent nose with complex approach, a wine in perfection, hints of dark berries and prunes in the background, mild spices, great depth, discreet roasting aroma. On the palate fine fruit and mild spices, complex and rich with elegant and persistent length, great wine.
