The Story

Valbuena, is the purest expression of the Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) in Vega Sicilia. Tinto Fino is clearly the predominant wine in the assemblage of the varieties that make up this magnificent wine. The other variety used is Merlot, which is added to a greater or lesser extent depending on the vintage.

The Valbuena Tempranillo is obtained from plots located on gentle concave slopes that descend from the wasteland. Those soils are made up of ...

Vintage 2016

SPAIN 2016 will be remembered for the piles of grapes thrown to the ground in Rioja. Our most renowned wine region, as well as Navarra and most appellations in Castilla y León, registered very high yields in sharp contrast with Mediterranean wine regions where drought led to below-average production levels. The gloomy picture came from Ribeira Sacra in Galicia where severe hail hit the area of Doade in August and destroyed 400,000 kilos of gra...

Written Notes

Gorgeous aromas of blackberries, black chocolate and shitake mushrooms follow through to a full body with round, plush tannins that are corduroy in texture. The flavors are intense, but not overdone.

New vintage of this classic and iconic wine within the Tempos Vega Sicilia group, Valbuena 5º Año 2016. Made in Ribera del Duero as Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) in the majority, accompanied by some Merlot that varies depending on the vintage.

Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5º Año is made with grapes from plots located on gently sloping hillsides with highly expressive soils composed of calcareous material at depth.

A wine whose name indicates the aging it has, as it is made in French and American 225-liter barrels and 8,500-liter vats over 30 months, then arriving in the bottle rack to be refined until it is 5 years old.

As in the previous vintages (2014 and 2015) that we have been able to taste, it is a truly exceptional wine.

In tasting it is a wine that in sight leaves us in glass stop a burgundy red color with certain cardinal edges in the movement in the glass.

The nose leaves us with powerful aromas of ripe fruit, incredibly fresh for its long aging, where currants, blueberries... combined with aromas of very fine oak. The wood does not overlap the fruit at any time. Balsamic touches typical of the Vega Sicilia terroir.

The palate has a characterful entry, giving way to fruit and oak hand in hand, in a silky passage, with great volume on the palate that envelops the entire palate. The aging leaves hints of vanilla, cassis, light toast. Very subtle, elegant. Good acidity that gives it great persistence and a great capacity for cellaring. Long finish.

A wine that after its tasting deserves the qualification of Exceptional.
