The Story

Written Notes

The first was a 1959 Lafite Rothschild.  It was deep and dark with rich purple fruit and classic pencil, cassis and carob.  This was a rock star bottle of Lafite and the greatest of all-time along with the 1953.  Everyone was in the ‘older is better’ zone, one I agree with more with every passing day lol (99).

Full medium red with an amber edge. Ineffable aromas of red plum, raw currant, cedar and menthol. Offers an extraordinary combination of silky texture and brilliant acidity and snap. A wine of great extract and penetrating sweetness. Finishes with big, noble tannins and great persistence. A fabulous vintage for Lafite that rarely disappoints. Drink now through 2025.

Tasted in Hong Kong. Very fresh bottle, rich and thick, very deep, lots of aromas like cedar. Superb

The most consistently good of all Lafites. I have never had a poor bottle. Still youthful with great fruit, a touch of eualyptus and a great balance. Will live forever. Needs to be decanted about an hour before drinking.
  • 98p
Château Lafitte-Rothschild 1959: a great wine, with a sensual texture, minute-long length with mineral, salty aspects. Elegant yet powerfol aromas on the nose, remembering of old wood (like in old mahogany furniture). Again perfect balance.
