The Story

The 50 hectares of Léoville and 17 hectares of Langoa, planted in gravelly soil with a clay sub-soil, include large proportions of old vines in order to obtain the best possible quality. The grape varieties is 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc for Léoville Barton, while Langoa Barton’s terroir is shared as follows 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc. Both properties have the same vinification methods.

The wines are typical of the Saint-Julien area, well balanced wines with subtle bouquets and flavours; the emphasis being on elegance and finesse rather than on power and extraction. This is achieved by picking the grapes at their maximum ripeness and allowing the fermentation to take place at a controlled temperature of 30/32°C. Although excessive extraction is avoided by removing the juice from the skins at the appropriate time, the wines have a lovely deep colour, excellent structure and sufficient tannins to ensure good ageing potential.

Vintage 1959

Bordeaux 1959 was proclaimed wine year of the century by overzealous journalists. Although it was a great year, it just wasn't the best year of the century. The year started with ideal weather conditions. The summer was perfect until the fall, when the rains arrived in mid-September. But the rains gave way to hot and dry weather, preparing a magnificent setting for the start of the harvest. The result was a truly ripe and juicy harvest. Reds are generally full-bodied, with mild acidity and an oily mouthfeel that comes from the high alcohol content. Although the vintage is generally compared to 1961, it has much in common with the 1949. The Sauternes vintage was also a success and the region produced very long-lived wines. Once again, Château Lafite-Rothschild was a complete success, sharing the title of best wine of the vintage with Haut-Brion. Hot on their heels are Pétrus, which must be decanted for at least three hours before drinking, and La-Mission-Haut-Brion.

Dafür entschädigte uns der 1959 Leoville Barton um so mehr. Dies hier war die letzte Flasche eines Lots, dass ich vor 30 Jahren in Belgien gekauft hatte. Alle Flaschen besaßen ein Etikett mit 1955, aber einen Korken mit 1959, was eindeutig der richtige Jahrgang war. Rauchig die Nase mit schöner, dunkler Frucht, viel Minze und etwas Eukalyptus, Tabak, Leder, dunkle Schokolade, Zigarrenkiste und Kaffee, dazu sehr kräftig mit guter Struktur und sogar noch Frische zeigend. Dürfte sich sicher noch 10+ Jahre weiterentwickeln – WT97. Leoville Barton ist immer eine Bank, nicht nur, weil die Preise halbwegs vernünftig sind. Leoville Barton braucht in der Jugend oft länger, altert dafür sehr gut. Mein ältester Leoville Barton war vor 19 Jahren ein immer noch faszinierender und gut trinkbarer 1863er.
