Vintage 1989

Bordeaux: The 2nd in a trio of great vintages and which produced a large harvest of ripe, rich and fleshy wines which generally possess soft, silky tannins, accompanied by a high alcohol level. It was the hottest summer since 1949 and the harvest began on August 28, the earliest since 1893. Written Notes

We crossed over to the Left Bank and begun with the 1989 Leoville Barton. Its nose was yeasty with traces of oatmeal. It had a lot of black fruits, with pinches of chocolate and windex. As most Leoville Bartons are, the 1989 had significant power on the palate, expressing big-time alcohol and acidity. Leave it to Bordeaux’s British ambassador to add the most oomph (93+).

Ruby, garnet rim. Scented, some violets, light thyme note, dark fruits, leather and cedar nose, flirting nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, rounded, elegant, detailed, still somewhat firm, slightly rustic, leaner palate, faint iodine note. Long. 92

Dark chocolate enveloped by waves of Montecristo No.4. This wine relaxes onto the palate with composure and no little stealth for a Grand Vin with 20 years' bottle ageing. Orange truffle and dried cranberries underpin accessible flavours that make this wine an incredible treat! This from one of my favourite vintages, providing consistent drinking pleasure over last 10+ yrs. Drink now. 17pts.
