Vintage 1961

1961 - the greatest Bordeaux vintage of all time?

I am writing this during the primeur campaign and I notice that Bordeaux château owners and merchants have been exceptionally quiet this year. I've been following this part of the market remotely for almost 30 years now and have been told about a lot of the "vintages of the century". Once wines are bottled and sold or vice versa, as is the case in Bordeaux, these claims tend to be changed.

Written Notes

Full medium red. Rather oaky aromas of redcurrant, plum, cedar, marzipan and smoked nuts, with a faint suggestion of cardboard. Intensely flavored but quite tight and a bit dry; the wine fruit element seems slightly suppressed as a result of the off wood character.

The 1961 Léoville-Barton is a wine that I have tasted three times previously. Deep in colour with slight turbidity, it has a wonderful bouquet with raspberry coulis, brown spices, quite old school in style with ash-like and Earl Grey aromas developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with dusky black fruit, very marine-like in style with rustic tannin. There is very good vigour considering its age with powerful tobacco notes towards the finish. I just love the way the character of Saint-Julien streams through from this 1961. Superb. Tasted at the 1961 dinner Chairman Miaow’s in Hong Kong.

D 1 h / G 1.5 h Medium intense ruby colour. Very intense nose with cassis aromas, nutty and little herbaceous nuances. Dry, moderately high acidity, elegant tannins, cassis combined with cranberry flavours. Moderately long finish, but still somehow closed. Very sophisticated wine with charming elegance. Can be kept at storage for another 5 years.
