Vintage 2016

Bordeaux 2016 in review “A paradox”

by Andrew Caillard MW

The 2016 Bordeaux vintage will be remembered as one of the great years of the 21st century. I haven't been this excited about the prospects of wines this young since the remarkable 2009 and 2010 vintages. At that time, China was at the zenith of its extraordinary rise of fine wines where the highest estates, particularly Château Lafite , had become a backwater currency. Each man a...

Written Notes

howy, with layers of warmed fig, roasted mesquite, black tea, incense and Turkish coffee notes, followed by waves of lush cassis, blackberry and raspberry confiture flavors. This has a graphite grounding rod, a tarry spine and riveting licorice snap details to keep it driving along. A head-turner for sure.

Terrific intensity of dark berries, almost peppery blackcurrants and violets with attractive and integrated, spicy oak and an earthy edge. The palate has a super powerful and long, linear core with plenty of fruit flesh strapped in tight for a long and thrilling ride into the finish. A blend of 86 per cent cabernet and 14 per cent merlot. Try from 2024.

Tasted in October 2019. Same percentage of CS and M as in 2015. More aristocratic than 2015, more stylish too, silky, great complexity and structure, big depth and length. Sophisticated and rich. Impressive stuff.

Nice depth as expected. The nose is elegant and powerful with an undercurrent of complex layered red and black fruits. Hints of Turkish Delight again, the palate is very sexy and polished, the tannins don't appear in the frame for a couple of seconds fixing you into a long, fine-grained spice- filled finish. Super stuff, big longevity as always but this very charming too.

Ruby. Scented, red berries. Fruity, fresh, nuanced, layered, floral, nuanced, seductive nose already. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fresh, fruity, detailed, playful, elegant, refreshing, superb balance, long. Among the best ever from here. 95-97

Deep colour. Lovely blackcurrant, creme de cassis aromas with praline notes and inky complexity. Velvety textured wine with fresh saturated pure blackcurrant pastille fruits, fine supple melting tannins and integrated espresso, roasted coffee oak. The finish is chalky firm with beautiful mineral length. Always a bellwether wine and it delivers. Tasted at the Union des Grand Crus. 96 points

Dark purple red with violet hue and black core. Very classic style, excellent nose very close to 2015. However on the palate with the same structure but a hint of sweetness, which makes the difference. 96
