The Story

Pontet-Canet has always been a legendary Médoc. It is deep ruby-red, crimson, and sometimes almost black colour and has a characteristic bouquet of black fruit (especially blackcurrant), liquorice, and prune as well as fig, cedar, and sometimes cocoa overtones. Pontet-Canet combines power and elegance, as well as concentration and fullness on the palate. Rather sinewy in style, Pontet-Canet is clearly a classical wine with a tannic structure t...

Vintage 2017

Bordeaux 2017 - A year of contrast

Life is not fair and neither is nature. As the earth warms, flowering becomes earlier and the risk of frost damage increases. Few winemakers remember the frosts of 1991, but their legacy is still haunting. When meteorologists predicted a cold blast on the nights of April 27 and 28, there was a real sense of panic. Most with the means deployed, candles, wind turbines, helicopters, lit hay, took all the meas...

This has a wide range of red currant, blackberry, black cherry and açaí berry fruit flavors forming the core, with a very sleek iron note lurking underneath it all. The finish uses a fine singed wood stitching to pull the fruit and minerality together.

Tasted in October 2018.  33% amphoras used (clay inside, concrete outside). Elegance and finesse here, silky texture, violet aroma on the nose, splendid complexity.

Blended of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, the deep garnet-purple colored 2017 Pontet-Canet opens with vibrant wild blueberries, black raspberries and crushed plums with notions of cinnamon stick, violets, unsmoked cigars and pencil lead plus wafts of roses, lavender and tilled black soil. Medium-bodied with very fine, incredibly plush tannins, it is deliciously savory in the mouth, with wonderful freshness and spectacular energy delivering many layers, resulting in a very long, mineral-laced finish. 96-98p

The 2017 Pontet-Canet has an attractive bouquet, one that is more forward than I expected, replete with brambly red berry fruit, pain grillé and brown spice aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity and commendable weight. It perhaps does not quite deliver the freshness and precision I was anticipating after its primeur showing, although I appreciate the tangy marmalade note that complements the black fruit on the structured finish. One to watch.

Dark purple red colour with violet hue and almost black core. A very precisely shaped wine with an elegant and expressive nose, wonderful fruit, dark berries , e.g. blackberries, plums, red berries, very ripe raspberries in the background, the oak is present as a backbone but not aromatically upfront. Excellent and balanced structure with ripe and almost velvety tannins, overall a wonderful balance with freshness and elegance, a wine of great purity, very classic, persistent style, another great wine. 96+
