The Story

La Mouline is a steeply terraced amphitheater on the Côte Blonde, a shape that shelters the 2.5 acre site from the wind and acts as a heat trap.  Soils are gneiss with lightly colored silicone containing limestone loess.  The site is planted to 89% Syrah and 11% Viognier, with the two varieties picked together and co-fermented. This extra dose of Viognier gives La Mouline its telltale aromatic complexity and additional softness and roundness; ...

Written Notes

One of my all-time favorites, was a little weird, having some brett issues. There were band-aids and licorice aromas, and some fruit started to break through with a little coaxing, but the wine was not 100%. The palate was especially gravelly and stony, but its length and power were unmistakable. Its flavors were internal, affected by brett most likely, and although one could understand the wine's greatness, its flavors were not complying.

This is the most remarkably consistent, mature Rhone I have ever tasted. Words do not do this justice. Majestic, flamboyant, opulent, and elegant, the fruits coat, soothe, and flow with ease coating and caressing your palate with its unique textural approach. The finish hits the 60-second mark and just keeps on going. This is what greatness in wine, with its unique character is all about. Drink from 2023-2035.

Very very deep colour. Very gloriously complete. Bonfire smell, spicy, exotic, complete. Absolutely no drop in the middle palate. Dangerously volatile. Dances rather than sings.

Inside Information

PARKER 100 POINTS:Still backward, but beginning to throw considerable sediment and reveal some amber at the edge, this wine reveals a distinctive, violet, cassis, bacon fat aroma intermixed with smoked duck and Asian spice components. Extremely full-bodied and sturdy, with noticeable tannin, this husky, powerful, concentrated La Mouline is less seductive than many vintages. In fact, in 1983, it behaves more like La Landonne. It can be drunk, but ideally it requires another 4-5 years of cellaring. Many 1983s have proven less exciting than initial predictions because of the refusal of the harsh tannins to melt away, but the tannin is clearly falling away in the 1983 La Mouline. There is still a wealth of fruit remaining. Anticipated maturity: now-2020. Last tasted 6/96.
