The Story

La Turque is Guigal’s latest addition to the single-vineyard Côte-Rôties. This vineyard produced outstanding wines in the first half of the 20th century, but then was not used for wine production for nearly 50 years.  The Guigals acquired the vineyard and re-planted it in 1980 and 1981 based on Etienne Guigal’s memory of the quality of the wines it once produced, and the first vintage appeared in 1985.

Wine Information

Parker 100 points: The debut vintage for this wine was especially impressive in view of the fact that the vineyard was so young. The 1985 La Turque's color remains a dark purple, with no signs of amber or lightening. The nose explodes from the glass, revealing scents of jammy black fruits, licorice, lead pencil, and smoke. Sweet, thick, highly concentrated flavors contain enough acidity and soft wood tannin to give the wine a well-focused feel...

Written Notes

The last wine from the Golden Cellar was another glorious 1985 Guigal, a 1985 Guigal Cote Rotie La Turque. This wine was singing right now, still young and very fresh, but showing many mature nuances and complexities and big-time menthol, bacon, earth, cassis and chocolate aromas and flavors

1985 was an excellent vintage with quite a small crop. After a flourishing flowering period, the summer was hot and dry. Heat continued into late harvest. Fine-looking bottle. Decanted for two hours. Feminine, perfumed, cherry and herb-scented bouquet with gentle toast and a chocolaty depth. Gorgeous layers of fruit. On the palate powerfully spicy, full of black pepper, satiny ripe cassis and black cherry, with a full-bodied, silky mouth feel and very persuasive texture. Already very good, but should be even more splendid in the near future.
