The Story

Cristal Rosé was first born a hundred years after the original Cristal, in 1974. It is an intriguing and particular prestige cuvée rosé, as it has the palest colour, yet a contrastingly fleshy, fruity, well-built palate of amazing freshness. Its secret is in the 60 per cent Pinot Noir from two hectares of Roederer’s own old-vine vineyards in Aÿ, Bonotte-Pierre-Robert and La Côte du Moulin, which are now cultivated according to biodynamic princ...

Vintage 2008

2008 -The Champagne vintage set to make history!

A first taste of leading winemakers’ 2008 champagnes reveals a miraculous vintage, bubbling with potential, which – whisper it – might just prove the greatest in living memory.

2008 was not, by any standards, a vintage year for the financial world. And for the greater part of it, 2008 was a pretty poor year for Champagne too: spring was freezing, summer gloomy and overcast. But then, aroun...

Written Notes

As a group, the 2008 Champagnes are focused and tightly wound. The 2008 Cristal Rosé has plenty of those qualities, but what places it in a truly rarified category is its sheer depth and verticality. Vinous, powerful and resonant, the 2008 Cristal Rosé has more than enough stuffing to support decades of cellaring. For starters, it won’t be ready to drink for another 5-10 years. This is a positively monumental, towering Champagne from Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon and his team.

Disgorged December 2017 or early 2018. Deep salmon. Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon pays more and more attention to the colour. ‘You can taste the colour sometimes. I am going for less and less colour with each year.’ 10% red wine. With the fruit from four parcels – two in Aÿ and one each in Avize and Mesnil.
Mid to deep salmon. Intense. The line and discipline of 2008 informs this wine. Reductive nose. Some strawberry fruit but overall real tension. Extremely vibrant. Some chew. Very long. Heady development in the glass.

A sublime come-hither nose both seducing and pulling away. The fruitiness is so complex already at youth: peach, red cherry, vanilla, white chocolate, orange blossom, baking spices, not to mention the fabulous overlaying, super refined toastiness. The intense, never-ending palate has such intensity and vibrancy, the acidity being impeccably integrated. The whole is crowned by the stunningly detailed and soft mousse carrying dancingly the wine from the beginning to the end.
