The Story

The noble origin of Rare Champagne dates back to a tribute to Marie-Antoinette and expresses its revolutionary spirit fight against the trivialisation of vintages.

Over the last forty years, Rare Champagne has only declared eleven vintages, the most demanding in Champagne, all in limited production.

Since 1976, the House has only released 9 vintages of Rare: 1976, 1979,1985, 1988, 1990, 1998 en Magnum, 1999, 2002, 2004 and now 2008,” sa...

After a mild winter, a dreary spring, a significantly cool summer, the ominous and extremely rainy weather became sunny, dry and almost cold, lasting throughout the harvest.

Vintage 2008

2008 -The Champagne vintage set to make history!

A first taste of leading winemakers’ 2008 champagnes reveals a miraculous vintage, bubbling with potential, which – whisper it – might just prove the greatest in living memory.

2008 was not, by any standards, a vintage year for the financial world. And for the greater part of it, 2008 was a pretty poor year for Champagne too: spring was freezing, summer gloomy and overcast. But then, aroun...

Written Notes

A wonderful newcomer to the prestige family. The beautiful bottle has an equally beautiful content with a lovely bouquet and seductive taste. Flexible and seamlessly soft and balanced. Light color with light orange note. Tastes like a mix of Louise Pommery and a slightly more elegant version of Charles Heidsieck Vintage Rosé.

Salmon. Apples, minerals, pears and peach, nuanced and detailed nose, brioche notes. Fresh acidity, apples, elegant and nuanced, detailed, lovely balance, soft, nuanced, gentle, long. 92

The 2008 Brut Rosé Cuvée Rare is the second rendition of this cuvée ever produced, and the wine is showing very well, unwinding in the glass with a youthfully shy nose featuring white cherries, blood orange, Meyer lemon, honeysuckle and dried white flowers that offers the promise of considerable complexity to come. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, racy and tight-knit, with good concentration, beautifully integrated acids and a fine mousse, concluding with a long, saline and delicately phenolic finish. This is really quite reserved after its recent disgorgement but should develop beautifully with a few years on cork.

Lot code: L1990198098. Blend of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir (including the 13% still red added for colour). A blend of 13 crus (including Chardonnay from Villers-Marmery, Vertus and Montgueux and Pinot Noir from Aÿ and Verzy). Fermented in tank with full malo. Aged for nine years on the lees and a further two years after the disgorgement in July 2018 with dosage 8 g/l.

Another extraordinary bottle tasted immediately after the Belle Epoque 2012. (I wonder how long we will go on explaining how Rare was spun out of Piper Heidsieck with Régis Camus in charge?) Very bright, pale flame-orange – if that makes sense. Very exciting nose with layers of coconut (if Camus is not insulted by that), broad and rich initially but very lively, bright-fruited finish. Super-clean, refreshing but layered. Really pretty spiffy! Grown-up wine with a dry finish. Thundering, multi-layered finish. This is a wine that commands attention. Though it is a crazy price.

Salmon rose light colour. Rich charming and seductively floral  nose with toastiness, spearmint and spices. Dry, intense, vivid palate with firm elegant acidic structure, refined mousse, ginger and spices. Lingering long. An absolute charmer! JL 96p (Oct 2021)

Still young but already impressive, this fine new vintage of Rare Rosé is dry and perfumed, packed with fruit and tightened by acidity. It features red fruit, zesty blood orange and ripe apple flavors. Because it is young and because it is dry, the wine needs to age.

Tasted in August 2019 in Helsinki, Finland. One of the 20 champagnes tasted. Nice nutty flavoured things, quite light, some elegance, short aftertaste.
