The Story

QUINTA DO NOVAL NACIONAL

No other vintage port attracts more attention than Quinta do Noval’s Nacional and its collectability can be partly attributed to its tiny production. Only 200 - 300 cases are produced in a declared year. This represents a tiny percentage of Quinta do Noval’s production of vintage port (between 1,200 and 5,000 cases in each declared year). Vintage 1947

Port Vintage: An outstanding vintage that produced fine, attractive wines, it was only declared by 11 shippers. These wines have been fully mature for many years, but well cellared, the best wines will last for many more.

Written Notes

The density to this is fantastic and gives a sweet and ripe palate of dried fruits, plums, sultanas, honey and salted caramel. Full and very sweet with great length. Shows the ripeness of the vintage still. Holding on gloriously. Drink now.

The 1947 Quinta do Noval Naçional shows better here than a previous bottle encountered in 2015. It has a deep tawny/tuile hue, clear in colour. The bouquet displays less of the balsamic notes I observed on the last bottle with perfumed red berry fruit, clove, dried fig and a touch of Indian spice. There is impressive vigour here. The palate is very harmonious with good depth, a slightly honeyed texture and a luscious maraschino cherry, citrus and marmalade finish that improves in the glass. What a fabulous Naçional! Tasted at Epure restaurant in Hong Kong.
