The Story

As always this 100% single-quinta wine is drawn from Noval’s own vines. There are three core parcels, all near the winery—the terraces directly surrounding the winery in Pinhão, the vines in the Roncão Valley and a parcel overlooking the Douro River.  Each year, the blending proportions for the Vintage Port will vary depending on the vagaries of the vineyard.

Wine Information

The name of Quinta do Noval first appeared in land registries in 1715. The property was owned for more than a century by the Rebello Valente family, who were given it by the Marquês do Pombal, Portugal’s all-powerful prime minister. In the early 19th Century, the
estate passed by marriage to the Viscount Vilar D’Allen, who was renowned for hosting wild parties at Noval, transporting dancing girls from the Folies Bergères.

Vintage 1963

Declared by all the major Port houses, 1963 was a monumental vintage against which many others are now judged. Power, dimension and real character are all hallmarks of this most memorable vintage. And even after more than 45 years the best wines never fail to impress with their essential three components of fruit, tannin and elegance. 1963s almost always appear to be younger than they really are.

Written Notes

This house (the first I ever visited many years ago when in Oporto on a cricket tour) has been around since at least 1715 (more accurately, the name first appears back then in property records – the first Ports seem to have emerged around a century later).

Since 1993, it has been part of the AXA Millésimes empire, which has revived its fortunes – it too was considered to have dipped a little in the ’70s and ’80s. Certainly, the finest Vintage Port I have ever been privileged to try came from this house, the legendary 1931. As well as the “standard” VP, Quinta do Noval has on occasion a tiny release of its Nacional VP from a patch of ungrafted vines. It is extremely rare (and expensive). Good examples are stupendous, though I remain to be convinced that all releases are at that level.

Over the years, I suspect I have tasted more 1963 Noval than any other ’63 and this was one of the best bottles I have had in a very long time. Ripe and slightly fleshy with spices, dry herbs and mild cocoa powder. Power, balance, and excellent length. On this evidence, there is still time ahead for this wine. 97.

D 1,5 h / G 45 min Moderately deep, garnety red colour. Very intense nose shows rich dark chocolate aromas with roastiness. On the palate the wine is sweet and full-bodied. Dark chocolatey flavours with blueberries, violets, and licorice notes. Pungent tannins and warming alcohol remains at the medium-long bitey finish. Less refined and complex in style with austerity that will mark this wine rest of its life. No rush to drink it yet, it will keep another decade easily.
