COUPE OR FLUTE

The champagne coupe, or saucer, is shallow and rounded with a flared lip and a short stem, rather like a water lily whereas the flute is slim, narrow and very tall, like a tulip. With its large surface area in contact with the air, champagne in a coupe quickly loses its effervescence. These glasses were highly prized a hundred years ago, when it was popular to drink Ruinart flat.

The narrow opening of the flute preserves t...

Vintage 2002

A cold winter and a mild late spring cued for a perfect June allowing early and fast flowering. Outstanding weather conditions prevailed and the season went on without dramatic turns. Rains in August raised concerns regarding gray rot, but finally sunshine and dry conditions throughout September resulted in an abundant crop of largely healthy fruit (11,930 kg/ha). Dehydration due to wind further aided in achieving perfect ripeness and addition...

Written Notes

Even more Dom Perignon-rosé like than before. Fatter, a bit heavier than most vintages with a major influence by Pinot Noir-tones and with the typical yeast culture that have not been fully roasted yet. The structure is amazing but the aromas are too undeveloped in the current situation.

Medium-deep salmon-peachy Immensely refined, layered nose with stylish coffee and seductive perfumy floral toasty notes. Cool breeze with vegetal notes, elegantly reductive style Crisp, firm, linear and fresh. A touch of phenolics on the back palate. Long and tight Mineral, spicy, firm and vinous Superb for the long term. Highly youthful for the time being. Heavenly, approaching perfection

Delicate copper rosé colour. Astonishing nose is super expressive with toasty brioche notes, apricots, yellow plums, touch of tangerine and nutmeg spices. Dry and broad palate with great concentration. Red fruits, fresh mint and exotic spices in the mid palate and bitter tangerine compote in the lingering finish. Very layered and complex champagne that sets the bar to gastronomic champagnes in the new height. Drink now. Serve at 8-10°C with roasted quail with cepes and cranberry sauce. JL 98p (4/2022)

Inside Information

The 2002 vintage was characterised by mild, dry weather.  Both spring and summer experienced wonderful sunny periods.  Even though there was rain at the end of August, the dry wind and fine weather which arrived in September made it possible for the rapes to ripen in excellent conditions.

Just the right amount of sunshine throughout September meant that the harvest was perfectly ripe while maintaining a very good level of acidity.  The late season was also favourable for crafting excellent red wines; smooth and concentrated.  The blend was made using 80% Grand Cru chardonnay, 72% from the Côte des Blancs (Avize, Cramant, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger) and 28% from the Montagne de Reims (Puisieulx, Sillery) and 20% pinot noir made into red wine, from the Silvery and Verzenay crus.
