Wine Information

The climate was very good and regular in 1978.

Wine making: A shorter than usual 12 - day maceration took place in steel vats because of the exhuberance of noble tannins present in the skins.

Ageing: The wine aged 22 months in Slavonian oak barrels (60 % new, and 40% used once or twice before), for the remaining 60%, French oak was used (the percentage of new to used barriques is the same as above).

The 1978 was a very good year in Piemond, but also in Tuscany where the first three months of the year were cold and wet. Poor start, but then spring came early and summer was warm but not terribly hot. Fine growing season. Small, a good quality crop. Bottle was in A1 condition. Decanted one hour. Deep dark, youtful colour. Very Bordeaux-like nose. Spicy, minty, ripe black fruit and hint of oak. Exceptionally full, refined and has very good acidity. Loads of fruit. A big, overwhelming and serious “old style” Sassicaia with long, velvety ending. No wonder, that Sassicaia 1978 got 20/20 scores from the judges at an international Cabernet tasting organised in London by Decanter.
