The Story

The chateau makes three different wines. The so-called grand vin, that is Château Latour itself, a second wine called Les Forts de Latour and a third wine simply called Pauillac. The grand vin comes from the original part of the vineyards, called the Enclos. This is the most prestigious part of the vineyard where the vines have a fine view of the Gironde estuary. Château Latour, Bordeaux, France

Located in the famous Medoc wine region, about 40 kilometers north-west of the city of Bordeaux, the vineyard of Château Latour belongs to the Pauillac appellation. The quality of its wine depends partly on the type of grape variety that is being used, but also on the exceptional combination of natural elements (geography, geology and climate) that constitutes its "Terroir".

Written Notes

I could immediately smell the freshness still in the 1938 Latour. There was that old vanilla ice cream quality to its fruit along with light cedar, citrus dust and caramel, and its palate was tender, soft and smooth, easy like a day at the beach. Touches of cedar, vanilla, mesquite and cinnamon graced this elegant red, and while it was soft by the usual Latour standards, I was still impressed (90).

 Ruby with brick rim.
Scented, red fruits, anise, bright and floral, nuanced, incredibly seductive, lovely.
Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, detailed, textured, nuanced, bright but lacks some fruit to fill in the structure, long.

Mahogany colour. Balmy nose with multi-layered character, garam masala, discreet hints of cold smoke in the background, balanced dried fruits. On the palate medium bodied with fine acidity and ripe tannins, well-structured with quite good length.

Med-intense brick red colour. Evolved nose shows smoke, resin and some vegetal notes (bamboo shoots). Medium-bodied palate shows gentle fruitiness with blackcurrant flavours but is dominated by acidity with tight and bit green tannins. Still aristocratic. – JL 91p (Aug 2023)
