This week sees the release of Moët & Chandon brand new prestige cuvée Collection Impériale Creation No 1. Aptly, as the launch is coinciding with the Paris Fashion Week, chef de cave Benoît Gouez is talking about it in fashion terms. If the non-vintage Brut Impérial is ‘prêt-à-porter’ and Grand Vintage is ‘sur measure’, then the new Collection Impérial is ‘haute couture’ or rather ‘haute oenologie’. ‘This is the highest expression of Moet & Ch...

Written Notes

An enticing, radiant pale gold with subtle greenish reflections, exuding elegance and modernity. The lively and persistent effervescence creates a fine, creamy mousse that hints at its sophistication and meticulous blending.

The aroma is both vibrant and multifaceted, offering an inviting bouquet of fresh fruits and delicate florals. Juicy green apple, white peach, and ripe pear take center stage, layered with zesty citrus notes of lemon and lime. As the nose develops, subtle hints of honeysuckle, acacia, and fresh brioche emerge, interwoven with a whisper of almond and chalky minerality. The aromatic profile is dynamic yet refined, showcasing a perfect harmony between freshness and complexity.

On the palate, Collection Impériale NO.1 delivers a seamless balance of brightness, texture, and depth. The initial sip is vivacious, with flavors of crisp green apple, nectarine, and tangy grapefruit bursting forth. The mid-palate reveals creamy layers of lemon curd, toasted hazelnuts, and a hint of vanilla custard, adding richness and elegance.

A backbone of vibrant acidity keeps the wine fresh and lively, while its fine, silky mousse provides a luxurious mouthfeel. The underlying minerality adds an earthy sophistication, grounding the fruit-forward character. Subtle notes of ginger, white pepper, and a touch of sea salt create an intriguing complexity that lingers on the palate.

The finish is exceptionally long and precise, leaving impressions of candied citrus peel, warm pastry, and a delicate saline note that hints at its origins in Moët & Chandon’s finest vineyards.

The Collection Impériale NO.1is a groundbreaking addition to Moët & Chandon’s repertoire, reflecting their innovation and mastery. The wine’s structure is impeccably balanced, with a fresh, forward energy complemented by depth and creaminess. Its complexity suggests the involvement of carefully aged reserve wines, while its vibrancy showcases the skillful integration of youthful freshness.

This champagne is designed for both immediate enjoyment and short-term cellaring. Over the next 3–5 years, expect the creaminess to deepen and the secondary notes of nuts and pastry to become more pronounced. Its current brilliance makes it a must-try for lovers of elegant, modern champagnes.

Versatile and gastronomic, this champagne shines alongside a variety of dishes. Pair it with fresh oysters or caviar for a luxurious start, or enjoy it with poached sole in a beurre blanc sauce. For heartier options, roasted chicken with herbed butter or creamy risotto with Parmesan and white truffle would elevate its creamy and mineral nuances. For dessert, a citrus tart or an almond financier would complement its bright, nutty undertones.

The Collection Impériale NO.1 NV is a bold and exciting expression of Moët & Chandon’s commitment to innovation and excellence. It marries freshness with complexity, making it both a celebration of the present and a nod to the maison’s timeless craftsmanship. Whether enjoyed today or in the near future, this champagne offers an exhilarating experience for both connoisseurs and casual enthusiasts alike.

“The recipe of blending of Moët & Chandon brand new prestige cuvée Collection Impériale Creation No 1 is indeed impressive in its scope, celebrating the house’s wealth of winemaking traditions and resources. ‘Haute oenologie’ as chef de cave Benoît Gouez likes to put it. Based on the fine and elegantly racy 2013 vintage (42,5%), Création No. 1 is a blend of seven vintages, comprising all; base wine from stainless steel, reserve wines from oak vats (2012, 2010, 2008, 2006 and 2000) and a luxurious 15% share of 2004 vintage emptied to the blend from bottles ageing on lees. Lemon yellow colour with golden hues. At first the elegantly fragrant and coolly fruity nose shows restraint but time in the glass reveals further and further layers. Sweet vanilla laden fruitiness with refined crème brûlée and coffee with cream tones. I am loving the torrefaction notes intermingling with both crunchy fresh white fruit notes and age-complexed honey and spice toned aromas that build up over time in the glass. The lees-enriched but airy and energised palate comes with a lacey texture and linear drive. Disgorged March 2022, the wine is showing pristinely youthful and slow-ageing, promising brilliant age-worthiness despite being immediately impressive and enjoyable. This is the first brut nature in the 280 years’ history of Moët & Chandon.”
