The 1964 Dom Perignon was a touch pinchy and weedy at first, but the bread, butter and honey came and joined the party shortly. No bubbles but great White Burgundy, Bernard insisted. There were citrus, dust and straw edges and a touch of the cat’s meow (pee) that crept out in the glass. It was still excellent, but definitely better a decade prior when it blew me away after being re-released, or perhaps that was just this bottle (94).

Believe it or not, but the '64 may even be a touch sharper than the '66. The winner of a tasting with twelve of the best vintages from Dom Pérignon, Krug, and Bollinger. This wine combined the big nutty tones of age with young acidity and fresh attack. The wine has every-thing, where the butterscotch taste is separated from the fruit and nut aromas. This butterscotch taste remains all the way and makes up the entire, exceptionally long, aftertaste. One of my three winners at the big Millennium Tasting at Villa Pauli. Since then, never really as impressive.

Bright, golden colour with slow, small, pearl necklace bubbles. Very delicate, complex and youthful nose. Distinctive lovely aromas of toastiness, roasted coffee, toffee, creaminess, and dried fruits. Very crisp and dry on palate with rich mousse. Medium-bodied champagne with moderately intense dried fruit flavours with rich mineral tones. Long lingering finish is greatly balanced, elegant and silky in style. One of the richest style Dom Pérignon ever made.

This vintage of Dom Perignon really shows its age. The bubbles have pretty much dissipated, leaving an aged white wine behind. Sadly the fruit and flavors are fading with a touch of bitterness in the finish. For those who enjoy the oxidized, dried leafy flavors of old white will have no problems enjoying this wine but for many looking for more sparkle and bubbles, this wine will disappoint.

Pale amber, pink hue, again this young feel, young as in the 66. Similar style as well, but this with more lemon candy and a touch of caramel, just to make it slightly more fat. Superb texture, superb acidity, layered, complex, stunning length. 98
