My favorite of the 2005 Colgins is the 2005 IX Proprietary Red Estate, a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The good news is that there are 1,500 cases of this blockbuster wine, which has a Bordeaux framework but the exuberance and richness as well as fruit purity of a great Napa wine. Deep purple in color with an extraordinary nose of scorched earth, blueberries, and black currants intermixed with some subtle charcoal notes, spice, box and spring flowers, it is very full-bodied, but beautifully structured and well-delineated. With good acidity despite what is an extremely high pH (3.9), the total acids are reasonable. This is a beauty of harmony, power, and great intensity, but it is light on its feet, and an exceptional example of what this high-elevation hillside estate vineyard is capable of producing. This wine should hit its prime in 5-6 years and last for three or more decades.

The Story

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, IX Estate Napa Valley Red is distinguished by complex fruit interplays, a luscious nose of rustic herbs, iron, clay and black fruits, huge layers of flavor and supple, sweet tannins impeccably well-balanced. The number IX refers to the parcel number and is also significant as the date Ann and Joe were married: 9/9. The 2002 vintage was the first, of four vintages, from this property to achieve the highest accolade of “a perfect wine”. Each year the blend displays extraordinary intensity, a beautiful purity, and a remarkably long finish. Approachable when young, it ages most gracefully

Wine Information

The 2005 vintage marks the fourth year we've produced our proprietary red blend from the new estate, and now we are truly experiencing the amazing potential of this site's terroir. IX Estate completely blows away the myth that wines from young vines are not as complex as those from older vines. That being said, as these vines continue to mature and are managed with our meticulous methods, IX Estate will no doubt become the new hallmark of Colgin. With the 2005 vintage as a gauge, there really is no doubt. We dropped nearly 75% of the crop to the ground in 2005 in order to maximize color and flavor and here are the results:

Tasting Notes:

With a color saturation of purple ruby, this wine feels difficult to resist. First impressions on the nose reveal roasted herbs, grilled meat juices, juniper berry, black cherries and chocolate liqueur. Secondary aromas of terroir evolve out of this wine, such as wet clay, crushed rock, lavendar and mineral. On the palate, the wine has a supple entry with layers of lusciously textured tannin. A fresh natural acidity brings just the right amount of structure to the palate. The finish is vibrant and long. This wine was aged sur lees for 20 months and was racked just before blending and bottling in June 2007. The 2005 IX Estate Red will age for 30 or more years, but will also drink well in 4-6 years near term.

The 2005 Colgin IX Estate Napa Valley Red Wine is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot.

We released 1500 cases of the 2005 Colgin IX Estate Napa Valley Red Wine in April 2008. Release price $275.

Written Notes

As these vines mature, the character of the "IX Estate" terroir will continue to grow. We dropped nearly 75% of the crop to the ground to maximize color and flavor, creating a wine that is difficult to resist. The nose reveals juniper berry, black cherries, chocolate liqueur, roasted herbs, and grilled meat. Secondary aromas of clay, crushed rock, lavender, and mineral are revealed in the glass. On the palate, the wine has layers of luxuriously textured tannins. Fresh acidity brings a balanced amount of structure to the palate. The finish is vibrant and long.

Elegant fruit with layers of cocoa, mocha and blackberry. Just beginning to drink well now but with no tertiary/bottle-aged characters showing. Still more about primary fruit - black plum, hint of black olives and earthy undertones. Firm svelte tannins with long finish.
