Wine Description
The Story
From an exceptional site that imparts earthy, ethereal notes of power and elegance, this signature cabernet reveals intense, deep layers of crème de cassis, barbecue smoke, graphite, blackberry and freshly cut flowers that excite the palate. Incredibly long and round, it is our rarest wine, the 2002 vintage achieving our first perfect score as “a wine of enormous concentration, multiple dimensions, layers of flavor, and a sensational one minute plus finish. Its purity, harmony and symmetry are prodigious.”
Wine Information
The estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon from the Tychson Hill Vineyard possesses power and elegance with luscious notes of black fruits and sweet earthiness- a wine with a distinctive personality!
Winemaker notes from Mark Aubert:
" Our second vintage of estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon from the Tychson Hill Vineyard again shows immense Cabernet based qualities unlike any other bottling from Colgin Cellars. The vines grow in unforgiving volcanic soil of mostly rock and shallow gravels. Yields in 2001 were a miserly 1.7 tons per acre or only one bottle of wine for every three vines! The wine reflects this low yield in a color of saturated black centerline and a youthful red edge. This single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is vinified from three separate blocks that make up the Tychson Hill Vineyard. Two of the blocks are planted to a rare Bordeaux clone and the third is a selection of our favorite Napa clone.
The growing season of 2001 produced deeply pleasurable wines reminiscent of no other vintage in recent memory. This cabernet reflects the vintage and the wonderful terroir of Tychson Hill by exhibiting a plethora of aromatics of fresh blackberries, raspberry terrine, sweet earth and minerals. Aged in 100% new Taransaud barrels for nineteen months, the wine has a sweet vanilla tone coupled with rich confectionary like tannins. The wine was bottled without fining or filtration and will age gracefully for two or more decades but will also drink well near term if desired."
We released 190 cases of 2001 Colgin " Tychson Hill Vineyard" Cabernet Sauvignon in November 2004. Release price $200.
