The Story

Blend: 87% Chardonnay & 13% Pinot Noir

The company’s flagship wine is Femme de Champagne, first produced in the 1990 vintage. It is a very fine and feminine champagne that gives a great promise of the company’s future quality potential. Carol Duval-Leroy has a passion for gastronomy and this is reflected in her winemaking too. The medium-dry Lady Rosé, for instance, is made to complement desserts and she has even written a 200-recipe cooker...

Vintage 2008

2008 -The Champagne vintage set to make history!

A first taste of leading winemakers’ 2008 champagnes reveals a miraculous vintage, bubbling with potential, which – whisper it – might just prove the greatest in living memory.

2008 was not, by any standards, a vintage year for the financial world. And for the greater part of it, 2008 was a pretty poor year for Champagne too: spring was freezing, summer gloomy and overcast. But then, aroun...

Written Notes

The 2008 Femme de Champagne is a breathtaking masterpiece of lacey elegance, aristocratic poise, and structural resonance, capturing the absolute best of a legendary, slow-ripening, and fresh vintage. Best Femme I have ever tasted. Presented in its iconic, curvilinear bottle, the wine pours a majestic, bright golden-yellow color illuminated by silver moonbeam reflections. The mousse is exceptionally fine, persistent, and weightless, sending up a steady, microscopic thread of tightly knit pearls.

The bouquet is a multi-dimensional, evolving revelation that shifts beautifully with air. It opens with an ethereal, perfumed canopy of acacia blossom, linden petals, and fresh lime zest. Slowly, the immense impact of its 15-year lees aging takes center stage, plunging the senses into a deep Parisian bakery aromatic profile filled with freshly baked brioche, toasted baguette, lemon curd pastry, and warm vanilla bean. Nuances of roasted cashews, dried apricots, and a surprising tickle of toasted cumin add a highly intricate, savory twist to the nose.

On the palate, the wine delivers a striking balance between the creamy luxury of a grand maison and the crystalline precision of pure, unadulterated fruit. The texture is silk-like and caressing, carrying a medium-to-full-bodied vinous presence across the tongue. True to the 2008 growing season, a racy, electric spine of chalky limestone acidity provides incredible drive and vertical tension, effortlessly managing the wine's rich extract. Underpinned by a beautiful, buttery string of flavors, it floats into a phenomenal, hyper-intense finish. The finale is exceptionally long and sapid, echoing with persistent trails of salted caramel, citrus rind, and a refined phenolic grip.

Drinking Window:

Having spent a decade and a half in the cool cellars of Vertus, this 2008 is just entering the very beginning of a long, glorious life. It is jaw-droppingly complete and rewarding to drink right now out of a wide-rimmed glass, but its pristine acidity and exceptional depth guarantee it will continue to gain magnificent nutty, tertiary complexity over the next 20 to 25 years. Peak drinking window: 2026–2050+
