The Story

Southeast of the Mondot hill, overlooking the town of St. Emilion lies Chateau Troplong Mondot. Named for its location and its former proprietor, Gerus Troplong, this estate has been home to viticulture since 1745. Its 33 hectare vineyard is planted to 90% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. "Cold," late-ripening soils produce one of the most dramatic wines of the appellation: an exotic, flashy, modern Saint-Emilion.

While it possesses more than enough stuffing and structure for extended cellaring, the wine's depth of fruit and supple tannins rarely get in the way of early drinkability. The Valette family, owners of Chateau Troplong Mondot, oversee production of 8000 cases of the Grand Vin each year, in addition to 2-3,000 cases of the second wine, called simply, Mondot.

Vintage 2009

Much like 1947, 1961 and 2005, 2009 is a year of almost overly (for Bordeaux) flamboyant and opulent wines with high maturity and low acidity. The tannins are exceptionally ripe, while the wines are quite voluptuous in style. The Left Bank recorded more hours of sunshine than legendary vintages such as 1947 and 1982, and the grapes had higher sugar concentrations than in 2003 and 2005. The key was significant diurnal temperature variations that allowed the grapes to withstand hot daytime temperatures. An exceptional vintage on all levels.

Written Notes

Although this is very ripe and rich with a generous body and a slew of black fruit aromas it’s also elegant and poised. The bitter chocolate character is more restrained than in many modern-style Right Bank wines of this period and there's a lovely balance of lively acidity with fine dry tannins at the complex finish. Drink or hold.

Château Troplong-Mondot 2009 / Producing a remarkable Saint-Emilion red wine from a 33-hectare vineyard, planted on the clay and limestone plateau east of Saint-Emilion, Château Troplong Mondot is an estate classified 1st Growth. The blend contains 86% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon.

This magnificent wine displays a very particular colour, that of black cherry with hints of violet. On the nose, the Château Troplong Mondot 2009 is deep, quite fresh and rich. One can detect notes of black fruits on the nose, along with wood, vanilla and spicy fragrances. On the palate, this wine is intense, showing great power. This wine is exceptionally rich with integrated, tight and sweet tannins. The wine offers an incredible length in the mouth, fine and very fruity.

Château Troplong-Mondot 2010 / Beautiful presentation. Black cherry color with violet rim. Deep nose, rich, with notes of black and stone fruits, oak aromas, spices and vanilla. Deep and powerful mouth exceptionally rich, tanins are tight, sweet and racy. Incredible length remarkable finesse, unmeasurable fruit! A huge bottle in an exceptional vintage. Undetermined ageing potential.

2009 Troplong-Mondot Open, intense and perfumed nose that is bursting with sweet, oaky spices, and sweet dark fruit, black pepper, leather and a woody, balsamic note. Dense and broad on the palate with lush, sweet dark fruit, black pepper and spice notes, leather and a refreshing streak of greenness. Big but very smooth tannins that balances the big fruit, though acidity is a bit low and there’s a disturbing bitterness on the long finish. Could score higher in the future if the bitterness disappears. Feels very extracted today. Drink 2023-2040 92p.
