The Story

Southeast of the Mondot hill, overlooking the town of St. Emilion lies Chateau Troplong Mondot. Named for its location and its former proprietor, Gerus Troplong, this estate has been home to viticulture since 1745. Its 33 hectare vineyard is planted to 90% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. "Cold," late-ripening soils produce one of the most dramatic wines of the appellation: an exotic, flashy, modern Saint-Emilion.

Vintage 2010

Drought and cool temperatures contribute to optimal ripeness

The sum of summer temperatures in 2010 was close to that of summer 2009 (962°C compared to 982°C), but significantly colder than those of 2005, which totaled 1052°C. These cool temperatures had a substantial influence on the balance of our wines, preserving a good level of acidity and an attractive aromatic freshness.

Troplong Mondot – very intense nose of black cherries/kirsch, you can feel alcohol on the nose and palate, hefty dose of new oak balanced by perfectly ripe fruit, obvious modern style with maximum of everything. A bit overdone. Long time runner – I believe it'll start to soften in ten years' time. 96p.

A deep garnet colour with a light amber ring. Rich, complex and black fruits nose with menthol, smoky and liquorice notes. Powerful, concentrated and fleshy mouth with velvety and rich tannins. Long and generous final. A great long ageing wine.
