The Story

Southeast of the Mondot hill, overlooking the town of St. Emilion lies Chateau Troplong Mondot. Named for its location and its former proprietor, Gerus Troplong, this estate has been home to viticulture since 1745. Its 33 hectare vineyard is planted to 90% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. "Cold," late-ripening soils produce one of the most dramatic wines of the appellation: an exotic, flashy, modern Saint-Emilion.

Vintage 2013

BORDEAUX 2013 VINTAGE REPORT

The 2013 vintage in Bordeaux was one of the most difficult since 1965 and 1968. Thomas Duroux of Château Palmer describes it as “the most complicated vintage in 20 years”. It rained almost continuously in the spring. Flowering was uneven, leading to poor set, millerandage and coulure. The threat of mold was alleviated by the arrival of warm, dry weather during the summer. For a while, winemakers hoped that abund...

Written Notes

"This is a youthful, very intense colour, ruby-red, really colouring the glass. The nose is also very youthful intense, pure, quite modern style here. There is a generous amount of oak, offering some slightly smoky flavour aromas, vanilla. Dark fruit, really ripe fruit, such as plum and blackberry. Really nice bite on the palate. I like this combination of concentration and freshness. It has a lot of lushes fruit, those dark berry notes with some hints of chocolate. I think the oak is really discreet, not too noticeable on the palate. It shows some roasted flavours on the finish. Really lushes and enjoyable fruit, first of all. It is underlined by plenty of tannin, quite grainy, quite fine, still showing their youth. They are really vigorous and present, but overall the balance is fine. The great emphasis is again the lushes dark fruit. This is doubtlessly a young wine that should develop more complexity from further aging. I think it has a good balance in there. There is nothing hard or harsh there. Good level of freshness, giving a lift to that modern dark fruit. Oak is in place, really good length, good purity of fruit. A wine that should definitely go along well. But for those who would like this style of wine in its youth, twenty minutes in the decanter, with a big piece of steak that should do the job."

Beautiful presentation, deep dark cherry colour with violet rim. Deep, complex, rich nose with black fruit aromas, dark chocolate, fresh spices and liquorice. A powerful, wide and concentrated mouth with melting tannins. A fresh and mineral finish. A long ageing wine.

Dark purple red with violet hue and black core. Aromatic nose with excellent toasting reminiscent of fresh ground coffee and hints of smoke. Succulent fruit complementing the nose. On the palate juicy character, pure fruit, elegant toasting and discreet minerality, complex with excellent length.

Inside Information

Full-bodied and atypically rich and concentrated for a 2013, it boasts beautiful blueberry and creme de cassis fruit as well as underlying chalky minerality, and good richness and concentration. It is a noteworthy homage to Christine Vallete’s brilliant efforts at Troplong Mondot, which resulted in the elevation of this estate in the 2012 St.-Emilion classification. It can be enjoyed over the next 10-15 years. It has been less than six months since the irrepressible and brilliant Christine Vallette passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer. I must confess that tasting at Troplong Mondot was a powerful emotional experience. However, the 2013 is clearly one of the stars of the vintage.
